Performs the duties of an Equipment Operator for the Storm Water/Maintenance Division in the Public Works Department. Work hours are 10 hours per day four days per week, Monday through Thursday. This position is a part year, 10 month max working 40 hours per week with Medical coverage option only. The hourly range for this position is $25.42- $34.32 per hour with a hiring range of $25.42 - $29.87, depending on qualifications and experience.
Position will remain open until filled.
- Responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs of the City's stormwater infrastructure, including storm sewers, inlets/catch basins, manholes, channels, swales, BMPs, and other associated infrastructure.
- Operate heavy and specialized equipment such as backhoe, front‑end loader, tractor with attachments, flusher truck, forklift, tandem axle dump truck, snow plow and spreader, sanders, deicer/anti‑icing applicators, street sweepers, skid steer, etc.
- Operate heavy equipment on a limited basis.
- Drive pickup truck to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to work sites.
- Respond to emergency situations such as flooding, adverse weather events, non‑hazardous waste spills, removal of street hazards.
- Weigh risks and make field decisions as appropriate under general direction of the Crew Supervisor.
- Participate in annual flood response and snow removal training.
- Recognize and report abnormally operating equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and construction equipment.
- Perform thorough pre‑ and post‑trip DOT inspections and document findings.
- Perform general labor as needed.
- Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
- High School graduate or GED.
- Experience operating a tandem axle dump truck, snowplow, backhoe, skid steer, street sweeper, and/or other construction equipment.
- Previous experience constructing or maintaining stormwater infrastructure or roadways.
- Experience with stormwater, water/wastewater, or roadway construction, maintenance, and repair.
- Welding and/or mechanical experience.
- Must possess a valid Class B commercial drivers license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement.
- Flagging and Traffic Control Certificates highly desired.
- Confined Space Entry training and/or certification desired.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, and techniques used in stormwater infrastructure inspection, maintenance, construction, and cleaning; pipe jetting; street sweeping; and snow and ice control.
- Skilled in operating light to medium duty equipment for constructing, repairing, and maintaining stormwater infrastructure and sweeping streets. Knowledge of snow and ice control techniques and ability to operate snowplows with anti‑icing/deicing equipment.
- Work safely, lead by example, and adhere to all safety policies, procedures, and regulations.
- Good record keeping skills and basic computer skills, including the use of project and asset management software.
- Ability to work odd hours, weekends, holidays, and overtime, especially during snow season and flooding events; serve as the on‑call 24/7 responder on a rotating basis.
- Construction knowledge and experience with stormwater infrastructure installation, concrete flatwork, asphalt, road base, trench excavation, backfill and compaction, construction dewatering, etc.
Frequent:
Strenuous to extreme physical effort including frequent use of heavy objects (50+ pounds) and heavy tools in awkward positions.
Occasional:
Exposure to marginal to moderate conditions that are unpredictable and may lead to injury. Frequent:
Exposure to heat and noise while working outdoors in the elements.
This position is considered essential personnel required to report for duty in response to community emergencies (natural disaster, fire, flood, blizzard, etc.).
