Summary

Operating under the general supervision of the Director of Access, Opportunity, and Family Partnerships, this position plays a critical role in supporting homeless students and families across the district by ensuring access to education, basic needs, and essential services in accordance with the McKinney-Vento Act. This position works closely with school staff, students, families, and community organizations to identify qualifying students, provide advocacy, and connect them with housing, transportation, nutrition, healthcare, and academic support.

Operating at both the district and community levels, the REACH Advocate coordinates outreach efforts, facilitates inter-agency collaboration, and secures financial and material resources to address student needs. The position also serves as a liaison between schools, families, and service providers, ensuring students receive the necessary support to remain in school and succeed academically despite housing instability. This role is essential in removing barriers to education, promoting social-emotional well-being, and empowering students to achieve long-term stability and success.

Job Responsibility Description

Homeless Youth Program Coordination

• Lead district efforts to identify and support students qualifying for McKinney-Vento Act protections and services.
• Collaborate with school staff to accurately identify students experiencing homelessness in compliance with McKinney-Vento Act criteria.
• Conduct needs assessments and provide information on McKinney-Vento Act rights to staff, students, and families.
• Manage a high volume of referrals at the start of each school year, ensuring timely support for newly identified students.
• Coordinate with schools, administrative services and community partners to connect students with resources.
• Conduct home visits in shelters, motels, and outreach programs to assess student and family needs.
• Investigate referrals and evaluate living conditions, considering mental, medical, and personal health factors.
• Report concerns related to Dependency & Neglect (D&N) and Domestic Violence (DV) to the appropriate authorities and facilitate placements at youth shelters as needed.

Homeless Student Support and Advocacy

• Provide consistent outreach, engagement, and advocacy for homeless students across the district.
• Assist students and families in accessing medical, educational, and supportive services under the McKinney-Vento Act.
• Guide families through school enrollment, academic planning, and access to extracurricular and community programs that promote student success.
• Help connect students to free recreational programs during non-school hours, including before/after school, holidays, and summer.
• Utilize trauma-informed care practices to support students experiencing poverty, homelessness, and instability.
• Facilitate access to educational and support services, ensuring students receive the resources needed for academic and social-emotional success.

Student Support and Services Coordination

• Ensure homeless students have access to essential services, including immunizations, nutrition programs, and transportation.
• Assist secondary students with class scheduling and accommodations.
• Monitor student attendance and collaborate with schools on academic and mental health interventions.

Community Outreach and Collaboration

• Represent the district in community committees and work groups, such as the Mesa County Coalition for the Homeless.
• Build strong partnerships with community agencies, businesses, and faith-based organizations to enhance services for homeless students and ensure a shared understanding of McKinney-Vento Act protections.
