Overview
GENERAL
PURPOSE:
Performs the duties of an Equipment Operator for the Storm Water/Maintenance Division in the Public Works Department. Work hours are 10 hours per day four days per week, Monday through Thursday. This position is a part year, 10 month max working 40 hours per week with Medical coverage option only. The hourly range for this position is $25.42- $34.32 per hour with a hiring range of $25.42 - $29.87, depending on qualifications and experience.
Position will remain open until filled.
Essential Job Functions- Responsible for the cleaning, maintenance, and minor repairs of the City's stormwater infrastructure, including storm sewers, inlets/catch basins, manholes, channels, swales, permanent stormwater quality treatment measures (BMPs), and other associated infrastructure.
- Operate equipment such as backhoes, front-end loaders, tractors with attachments, flusher trucks, forklifts, dump trucks, snow plows and spreaders, sanders, deicer/anti-icing applicators, street sweepers, skid steers, trailer-mounted equipment, end dumps, vacuum/jet trucks, camera inspection vans, commercial mowers, welding equipment, and other related tools.
- Operate heavy equipment on a limited basis and drive pickup trucks to deliver personnel, equipment, and materials to work sites.
- Respond to emergency situations such as flooding, adverse weather events, non-hazardous waste spills, and removal of street hazards.
- Weigh risks and make field decisions under the general direction of the Crew Supervisor.
- Participate in annual flood response and snow removal training.
- Recognize and report abnormally operating equipment.
- Perform routine maintenance on assigned vehicles and construction equipment; conduct thorough pre- and post-trip DOT inspections and document findings.
- Performs general labor as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
- Required: High School graduate or GED.
- Preferred: Experience operating a tandem axle dump truck, snowplow, backhoe, skid steer, street sweeper, and/or other construction related equipment; experience constructing or maintaining stormwater infrastructure or roadways; experience with stormwater, water/wastewater, or roadway construction, maintenance, and repair; welding and/or mechanical experience.
- Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) with air brake and tanker endorsement.
- Flagging and Traffic Control Certificates highly desired.
- Confined Space Entry training and/or certification desired.
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of equipment, materials, and techniques used in stormwater infrastructure inspection, maintenance, construction, and cleaning; pipe jetting; street sweeping; and snow and ice control.
- Skilled in operating light to medium duty equipment to construct, repair, and maintain stormwater infrastructure and sweep streets. Knowledge of snow and ice control techniques and ability to operate snowplows with anti-icing/deicing equipment.
- Ability to work safely, lead by example, and adhere to all safety policies and regulations.
- Good record keeping and basic computer skills, including the ability to use project and asset management software. Training will be provided as needed.
- Must be able to occasionally work odd hours, weekends, holidays, and overtime, particularly during snow season and during flooding events. May serve as on-call 24/7 responder on a rotating basis with other stormwater equipment operators for after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergency duty. Flexibility and ability to reach the Public Works Administration Building within 30 minutes during adverse weather are required.
- Construction knowledge and experience with stormwater infrastructure installation and related construction activities are preferred.
Frequent:
Strenuous to extreme physical effort, including frequent use of heavy objects (50+ pounds) and heavy tools in awkward positions.
Occasional to frequent exposure to heat, noise, and outdoor elements; unpredictable conditions that may lead to injury.
