General SummaryThe Flat Rate Technician (Tech) supports VIP’s mission to earn automotive customers for life by delivering a superior customer experience. The Tech diagnoses and repairs automotive systems, replaces parts, fluids, tires, and accessories while adhering to safety, loss prevention, customer service, and regulatory standards.
Duties & Responsibilities- Prioritize workplace safety, complete safety training, lock out unsafe equipment, and report hazards.
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain all automotive systems covered by the ASE series (A2 – Automatic Transmission/Transaxle, A3 – Manual Drivetrain & Axles, A5 – Brakes, A6 – Electrical/Electronic, A7 – HVAC, A8 – Engine Performance).
- Initiate and display a valid Service Work Order before servicing a vehicle; return all printouts and keys to the Service Desk upon completion.
- Obtain parts only through the Desk Team (Service Manager, Assistant Manager, Service Writer, or qualified Tech) and return unused parts; discard cores, batteries, and used tires to designated areas.
- Maintain a minimum 16‑week average productivity for the position and meet or exceed 80% of billed labor hours during any consecutive 16‑week period.
- Complete all required training and certifications: LMS training, safe equipment operation, State Vehicle Inspector license, T.I.A. BATS and TPMS, ASE certifications (G1, A4, A5, or four A‑Series specialties).
- Support the 5‑for‑5 Customer Engagement Process, perform road tests after service, secure and lock vehicles, install seat covers, floor mats, and steering wheel covers, and keep a clean work area.
- Participate in daily/weekly shop maintenance, comply with safety and loss prevention programs, and support VIP’s Tire Program for general services.
- Review and authorize time and attendance records; comply with company and regulatory waste disposal requirements.
- Maintain technical capabilities, comply with VIP culture, attend meetings, and assist with onboarding apprentices.
- Report any facility or equipment issues in the relevant database and ensure the department remains clean, safe, and compliant with environmental codes.
- Maintain at least 50% productivity (Billed Hours ÷ Worked Hours).
- Minimize comeback rates, ensuring the work is completed properly the first time.
- Adhere to the standard 40‑hour work week and attendance expectations.
- Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Read, analyze, and interpret technical instructions and regulations.
- Explain vehicle information and diagnostic findings to customers and coworkers.
- Diagnose and recommend solutions to basic automotive problems.
- Apply written and oral instructions, diagrams, and schedules to perform services.
- Perform automotive services listed above accurately and efficiently.
- Minimum Education & Experience
- One year of related automotive service experience.
- Completion of a two‑year college or technical program (recommended).
- Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
- Current valid driver’s license issued in state of residence.
- ASE Certification G1 – Maintenance and light repair (recommended).
- ASE Certification A4 – Suspension & Steering.
- State Vehicle Inspector license (state‑specific requirement).
- T.I.A. BATS certification and T.I.A. TPMS certification.
- Additional ASE certifications as required by the position.
Typical tasks include standing, walking, reaching, lifting up to 20 lbs, and using protective eyewear at all times. Tasks may involve carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, and kneeling, with brief periods of activities exceeding 2/3 of the time.
