Responsibilities
  • The Department of Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences, located in the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the level of Assistant Professor with expertise in pharmaceutical sciences and research interests in modeling, analysis, and simulation. The ideal candidate should have a successful publication record and demonstrate potential for extramural funding to support their research programs.
  • The candidate should be a highly motivated and innovative scientist whose research integrates computational and quantitative approaches to advance drug discovery, development, and translational/clinical pharmacology. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent basic or translational research program in areas such as:
  • Model-informed drug discovery and development
  • Quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) modeling
  • Physiologically-based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling
  • Pharmacometrics; population pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics (PK/PD)
  • Computational modeling of drug absorption for formulation development
  • AI-driven or machine-learning-based drug discovery, drug screening, drug toxicity and/or lead optimization
  • Application of omics technology or high-throughput imaging for validation of targets

The successful candidate will ideally bridge multiple programs and centers within the college, including pharmaceutical, nutritional and/or applied biomedical sciences, as well as the university. Interdisciplinary collaboration opportunities exist with other UMass Lowell Colleges, including Kennedy College of Sciences and Francis College of Engineering, and with Research Centers across the 5-campus UMass system, including UMass Chan Medical School.

Appointment Details

This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment on a state-supported line. Base salary is institutionally guaranteed and not contingent on external grant funding; summer salary may be available via sponsored research projects or teaching.

Teaching and Service

All faculty are expected to teach undergraduate and graduate students and engage in service to the department, college, and university. Tenure-track faculty have a base teaching load of four courses per year, with a significantly reduced teaching load for the first four years and additional course reductions based on scholarly productivity.

Department Context

The Biomedical and Nutritional Sciences department currently has 18 full-time faculty and 5 full-time staff members, in addition to postdoctoral fellows and research staff. This vibrant team of research-focused, teaching-focused, and clinical-focused educators is actively engaged with students through innovative health sciences education, including experiential and interprofessional education, hands-on laboratory training, and research mentorship. Academic programs in the department include undergraduate and graduate programs in nutrition, applied biomedical sciences, medical laboratory sciences, and pharmaceutical sciences.

Faculty have the opportunity to mentor PhD students in pharmaceutical sciences, as well as in the intercollege biomedical sciences and biotechnology program. Research in the department is multidisciplinary and includes cutting-edge topics in pharmaceutical sciences, in addition to research in biomedical sciences, nutritional biochemistry, and epidemiology. Opportunities abound for collaborative research across the college and university, with exercise science, public health, nursing, engineering, business, and the sciences.

College

Context

The Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences (ZCHS) is a dynamic and growing college of 65 faculty and 1,900 students. In addition to BNS, the College houses the Solomont School of Nursing, the Department of Public Health, and the Department of Physical Therapy and Kinesiology. Faculty research within Zuckerberg College ranges from laboratory research to clinical interventions and community-based projects, and research expenditures in the college have more than doubled in the last several years.
