Visiting Lecturer - Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

General Summary of Position:

The Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EEAS) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track Visiting Lecturer. This position focuses primarily on teaching undergraduate courses for non-science majors in environmental science and Earth system science. The position is renewable annually, potentially leading to an appointment of Assistant Teaching Professor following three consecutive years of excellent performance evaluations.

About the Department of Environmental, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences

The Department of Environmental, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences (EEAS), part of the Kennedy College of Sciences, focuses on understanding and solving Earth system and environmental challenges through interdisciplinary education, research, and community engagement. Key research areas within EEAS are focused on climate and climate change research, weather forecasting and extreme events, state-of-the-art laboratory and field methods in geochemistry and pollution, and assessment of Earth system changes across geologic to modern timescales.

The department is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and service, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration and student success.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Teach the equivalent of 18 credit hours per academic year, including courses for non-science majors and introductory courses focused on geology, environmental science, and atmospheric science.
• Prepare and deliver engaging, inclusive, and effective course materials
• Participate in departmental, college, and university service activities
• Engage and recruit prospective high school and transfer students
• Develop interdisciplinary collaborations within the university and the greater Lowell community
• Provide academic advising to a minimum of 12 EEAS undergraduate students
• Assist with laboratory organization, supplies, and basic maintenance as needed

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

• MS in Environmental Science, Geology, Atmospheric Sciences, or a closely related field
• Demonstrated ability or strong potential to develop new courses
• Willingness and ability to teach introductory courses outside one's primary area of expertise
• Commitment to fostering student engagement, inclusion, and a strong sense of belonging
• The ability to work effectively in teams
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate teaching, particularly in introductory environmental science, Earth system science, or geology courses
• Experience teaching non-science majors and supporting students with diverse academic backgrounds
• Evidence of effective use of student-centered, active-learning, or inclusive teaching practices
• Experience developing or revising courses to improve student engagement, learning outcomes, and retention
• Commitment to mentoring and advising undergraduate students
• Experience with instructional laboratories or hands-on learning environments
• Interest in contributing to teaching-related service, such as curriculum development, assessment, or pedagogical initiatives

Special Instructions to Applicants:

This is a full-time, benefited, non-union position. For non-union visiting position, anticipated salary is minimum of $65,000 with maximum up to $100,000 /year based on qualifications and visiting rank.
