Job Description

The School Nurse is to provide a robust health program for the assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and improvement of the health of students. The School Nurse will direct the Health Clinic in its daily functions. The School Nurse will be responsible for ensuring compliance of all student records, developing and implementing policies and procedures, managing relationships, and identifying areas of improvement to the care of students.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure that all student health records are current and each student has the proper exams and vaccinations, as required by the Massachusetts DPH
    - School Health Unit.
  • Communicate to parents and agents regarding any needed vaccinations, exams, or forms.
  • Arrange for vaccinations, physicals, and appointments as needed.
  • Provide confidential health advice to individual students.
  • Assess students who come to the Health Clinic, administer first aid, arrange medical appointments or, if appropriate, send them to their classes if they are believed to be well enough.
  • Establish and maintain records of all visits and dispensed medication.
  • Oversee the Medication Administration Regulations and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain the Health Clinic, including keeping the treatment rooms hygienic and comfortable, well-stocked, and with excellent supervision of students.
  • Assist with promoting health, with a specific focus on
    - Exercise and healthy eating
    - Dealing with stress
    - Mental health and wellbeing, including depression and bullying
    - Sexual health and relationships
    - Drug and alcohol abuse and smoking.
  • Maintain communication with the school physician and other practitioners in order to promote and maintain students’ health and welfare.
  • Establish Standing Orders.
  • Respond to medical emergency situations.
  • Organize the coordination of first aid training for staff.
  • Develop policies and procedures for the Health Office.
  • Review, revise and implement emergency policies, including in-service health and safety programs for personnel.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts State Laws governing nurses and their implementation.
  • License as a School Nurse through the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Desire to be part of a Catholic school community.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with a team.
  • Adaptability, initiative, and flexibility.
