Controls Engineer – Water & Wastewater Systems
Lang Recruiting is partnering with a growing engineering and infrastructure organization to identify a Controls Engineer with experience supporting water, wastewater, and critical utility systems. This opportunity is ideal for an automation professional who enjoys designing and supporting PLC-based control systems that directly impact public infrastructure, water quality, and operational reliability.
The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in industrial controls, SCADA systems, and process automation, along with a collaborative mindset and passion for supporting essential infrastructure projects.
Position OverviewThe Controls Engineer will be responsible for the design, programming, implementation, and support of automation and control systems used within water treatment, wastewater, pumping, and utility environments. This role will work closely with engineering teams, operators, contractors, and municipalities to ensure systems are reliable, secure, and optimized for long-term performance.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to projects involving water distribution, treatment facilities, lift stations, pumping systems, and infrastructure modernization initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Design, program, and troubleshoot PLC and SCADA systems for water and wastewater applications
- Support automation and controls projects from concept through commissioning
- Develop and maintain HMI interfaces, alarm systems, and process control strategies
- Configure and support instrumentation including flow meters, pressure transmitters, analyzers, and level sensors
- Assist with control panel design, network architecture, and system integration
- Troubleshoot operational and controls-related issues in field and plant environments
- Collaborate with project managers, operators, contractors, and municipal stakeholders
- Support cybersecurity and system reliability initiatives for critical infrastructure systems
- Develop technical documentation including electrical schematics, control narratives, IO lists, and operational procedures
- Participate in startup, commissioning, testing, and on-site support activities
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related technical field
- Experience with PLC programming and SCADA systems in industrial or utility environments
- Strong understanding of process controls and instrumentation
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs
- Experience troubleshooting industrial electrical and automation systems
- Strong communication, organizational, and project coordination skills
- Ability to support field work, commissioning, and occasional travel as needed
Experience with one or more of the following is highly valued:
- Water or wastewater treatment facilities
- Municipal utility infrastructure
- Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation PLCs
- Siemens PLC systems
- Ignition, Wonderware, or other SCADA platforms
- Industrial networking and communications
- Remote monitoring and telemetry systems
- Cybersecurity standards for industrial control systems
- AutoCAD Electrical or similar software
