Job Profile Summary
This role focuses on providing professional and nonprofessional nursing care services in accordance with physician orders. In addition, the role performs nursing leadership duties, including controlling, directing, and participating in the activities of the organization through a hierarchy of managers and supervisors. Responsibilities also include long‑term strategic planning, determining organizational policies, allocating resources, and making decisions regarding growth and diversification to accomplish the entity's vision.
The manager supervises employees across all operational levels, focusing on tactical and operational activities within a specified area. Goals are achieved through the performance of direct and indirect reports, ensuring policies, practices, and procedures are understood and followed by staff, customers, and stakeholders.
The Clinical Manager oversees the daily clinical and administrative operations of the designated unit(s). The manager prepares staff schedules and allocates resources, ensuring patient care aligns with Tufts Medicine’s goals, mission, and vision. The PCU is a 36‑bed unit for telemetry, step‑down, or intermediate level of care. Patients requiring peritoneal and hemodialysis, cardiac catheterizations, pacemakers, internal cardiac defibrillator placement, post‑operative monitoring, and interventional radiology may be placed on the PCU.
Patients receive continuous cardiac monitoring and may also receive continuous oxygen saturation monitoring, high‑flow oxygen, Bi‑PAP ventilation, and continuous intravenous cardiac medications. The nurse‑patient ratio is lower than on the med/surg floors, allowing patients to be more closely monitored.
- Massachusetts RN Licensure
- 5 years of RN experience with at least 1 year as a charge/lead RN
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
- Uses knowledge and expertise to identify potential problems and/or resources for patients and families
- In collaboration with the director, ensures all staff maintains competency‑based practice based upon patient population
- Participates in nursing research
- Identifies avenues to pursue own professional growth
- Keeps current on regulatory issues and trends and employs strategies to meet standards in a proactive manner
- Supervises staff by evaluating work performance, providing guidance, and timely feedback based on outcome measures
- Participates in interdisciplinary rounds to address patient/family needs and discharge planning
- Recognizes, responds, and provides follow‑up on issues, concerns, and suggestions on behalf of the patient population and staff
- Allocates resources and coordinates services to optimize patient care and services
- Develops and monitors operating and capital budget; implements strategies to improve efficiency and reduce costs
- Performs performance reviews with staff
- Participates in staff interview process, provides direction and discipline to staff as appropriate, and orients new staff to facility
- Creates and fosters a learning environment that facilitates professional growth and development of staff
- Develops and implements processes to enhance operations and practices for ongoing quality improvement
- Develops, implements, and monitors written policies and procedures
- Leads and/or participates in hospital, departmental, and multidisciplinary teams, committees, councils, and special projects
- Plans, implements, and evaluates the delivery of nursing care in accordance with standards of practice
- Occasional lifting of 30‑35 lbs and turning patients
- Prolonged standing and walking
- Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting
- Exposure to infectious disease and possible carcinogenic chemicals
- Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens
- Requires fine manual dexterity to lift and maneuver patients
- Requires visual and aural acuity necessary to monitor patient care
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and healthcare team
- Ability to maintain and develop clinical knowledge, judgment, and skills
- Knowledge of and application of the nursing process
- Possesses strong clinical and theoretical skills
