Position: Registered Nurse, RN - ICU 1 (36 Hour Nights 6:45pm-7:15am)

Job Overview

The RN Complex Care independently provides direct nursing care to patients and their families in accordance with established policies, procedures, and practices in a complex care area.

Location and Schedule

Unit
: ICU‑1

Shift
: 36 hours, evenings and nights from 7:00PM to 7:00AM. Weekends and holidays are required.

Unit Summary

ICU‑1 is a 12‑bed intensive care unit that provides care for both medical and surgical critically ill patients, including cardiac, pulmonary, neurological, hematologic, obstetric, gastrointestinal, renal, vascular, and multisystem diagnoses.

Patients may require hemodynamic or respiratory support, close monitoring, or intensive levels of nursing care, including IABP, Impella devices, lysis, EKOS, TPA, hemodialysis, CRRT, PA lines, or 24‑hour EEG monitoring.

The ICU staff receive ongoing bedside and classroom training, teaching, and educational opportunities. Newly hired nurses use AACN’s online training program ECCO as part of their onboarding and training. The goal is to deliver high‑quality patient care to every ICU patient.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Massachusetts RN licensure.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Department‑specific certifications relevant to the patient care type may be required.
  • Experience as specified for Level I, II, III, or IV.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Participate in and maintain awareness of performance improvement initiatives.
  • Conscientiously evaluate and integrate evidence‑based practice and research into clinical practice.
  • Conduct and document accurate clinical assessments.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized patient plans of care.
  • Use professional nursing judgment to individualize the plan of care based on patient assessment.
  • Manage patient assignments by delegating and effectively utilizing team members based on patient needs.
  • Develop comprehensive educational plans for patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources, and document according to department standards.
  • Recognize patient/family rights through the support of informed decisions and advanced directives.
  • Continuously evaluate and revise the care plan according to changes in patient health status.
  • Develop comprehensive discharge plans utilizing appropriate resources and referrals, including community resources.
  • Support the development of new staff members and facilitate their transition into the unit.
  • Guide the professional growth of department staff through precepting.
  • Participate in professional development by identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate education.
  • Participate in departmental committees as needed.
Physical Requirements
  • Occasional lifting of 30–35lbs and turning patients.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.
  • Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting.
  • Exposure to infectious disease and possible carcinogenic chemicals.
  • Exposure to blood‑borne pathogens.
  • Requires fine manual dexterity to lift and maneuver patients.
  • Requires visual and aural acuity necessary to monitor patient care.
Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and the healthcare team.
  • Knowledge of and application of the nursing process.
