Department SummaryAbout the UNT Honors College
The Honors College helps approximately 2,000 undergraduate students get the most out of their UNT experience by providing in-class and extracurricular activities that are broader, deeper, or more complex than the norm. Honors College members may take Honors courses, engage in undergraduate research, participate in Honors College programming, live in Honors College housing, and enjoy other membership benefits.
The goal of the Honors College is to help these students build an excellent foundation that prepares them for studying at the graduate level and establishing a fulfilling career.
The Honors Academic Advisor provides academic advising services for members of the college, and assists with a variety of administrative projects related to Honors retention and award completion. Specific time responsibilities: 50:
Advising firstyear, transfer, and continuing Honors College Students. 30:
Various administrative tasks assigned by supervisor and the Associate Dean of the Honors College. 20:
Professional development College and campus committee work, professional organization membership.
Bachelor's degree and two years of experience in student affairs, student services, counseling, or professional academic advising.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Strong presentation skills. Strong problem solving skills. Ability to use a variety of complex computer applications. Ability to communicate effectively with populations verbally and in writing. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work independently and lead project teams effectively. Considerable knowledge of University policies and procedures related to functional area (or ability to rapidly assimilate).

Job Duties- Serves as retention expert for the Honors College, and will plan and implement activities that address the various strengths and needs of our student community. Stays informed of Honors programs and participates in events as appropriate.
- Adheres to and fosters high standards of ethical conduct, while being compliant with all applicable laws and regulations. Expected to work as a member of the Honors College office team in a professional manner to accomplish college level tasks and goals while collaborating with others to support college mission. Staff member will maintain a collegial relationship with others in the college and university, and will apply professional standards to all work carried out as a member of the college staff.
- Provides academic advising services for newly admitted first-year students, transfer students, and continuing students in the Honors College. Focus of advising sessions with these students groups will be developing Plans of Study to assist students in earning an Honors Award during their time at UNT.
- Plans, organizes, and executes all aspects of Honors advising with a strong attention to detail and a proactive approach, including scheduling appointment blocks, managing their calendar, preparing materials, conducting meetings, and completing all necessary administrative tasks to accurately track student progress.
