Job Description for Coach

Classification: Exempt

Reports To: Athletic Director

Purpose: The purpose of this position is to support the school’s mission statement by helping to develop well‑rounded young men and women who demonstrate Christ‑like humility, self‑lessness, confidence, and poise on the field of play.

Summary: The coach performs all activities necessary to carry out the aims and objectives of the sport as outlined by the Athletic Director, emphasizing a balanced approach to faith, family, academics, and sports; providing training and coaching to enable students to perform with excellence and self‑discipline for future Kingdom service; and supporting an athletic culture that demands honor and respect while representing Christ well.

Supervision Received and Exercised: The coach receives direction from the Athletic Director, exercises judgment in keeping with the school’s philosophy, beliefs, values, and discipline approach, and exercises functional supervision over student athletes, team managers, and trainers.

Work Schedule: Part‑time, seasonal; schedule driven by practice times and team events; travel to athletic events off campus required.

Essential Functions

Position is structured around the following focus areas with approximate percentage of time spent.

  • Spiritual Leadership (10%) –
    • Study the Bible, God’s only written Word.
    • Articulate and exhibit ethical implications of lifelong commitment to following Jesus Christ.
    • Measure knowledge against Scripture.
    • Demonstrate commitment to the life of a church and its traditions.
    • Model Christian living on and off the field of play.
    • Perform duties as a minister and steward of the Christian faith.
  • Athletic Leadership (10%) –
    • Assist the Athletic Director with program responsibilities.
    • Design a challenging training program that develops excellence and godly characteristics.
    • Attend staff meetings and complete assignments timely.
    • Assess players’ skills and make team assignments.
    • Prepare practices, meetings, contests, transportation.
    • Maintain records, complete paperwork.
    • Understand and apply KPA policies, procedures, and regulations.
    • Enforce school rules and discipline.
    • Comply with league rules and regulations.
  • Athletic Coaching (70%) –
    • Maintain standards of student behavior for a respectful learning climate.
    • Implement KPA Athletics Handbook in accountability.
    • Develop regular practice schedule and organize practice times.
    • Support team environment demanding honor and respect.
    • Coach and instruct players on rules, regulations, equipment, techniques.
    • Observe players to determine improvement needs.
    • Determine game strategy based on team capabilities.
    • Create opportunities for feedback, counseling, discipleship.
    • Supervise students in locker rooms at home and away games.
    • Instill respect for equipment and proper use.
    • Ensure safety and medical requirements are followed.
    • Model non‑discriminatory practices.
  • Managing Equipment and Facilities (15%) –
    • Respect practice time as directed.
    • Maintain a safe environment and facilities.
    • Assist with inventory, issuance, collection of equipment, uniforms.
    • Ensure proper safeguards for maintenance.
    • Secure buildings, equipment, lockers after use.
  • Communication (5%) –
    • Initiate partnership culture with parents, involve them, communicate effectively, and address concerns.
    • Respect administrative chain‑of‑command and refer through proper channels.
  • Professionalism (5%) –
    • Demonstrate commitment and loyalty through speech, punctuality, dress, attitude.
    • Present consistent demeanor to students.
    • Accept constructive feedback for growth.
    • Engage in professional development and organizations.
    • Know safety procedures including first aid and CPR.
    • Perform other duties as assigned.
