To develop, manage, inmate educational programs within the Sheriff’s Office Detention Division; to serve as the contact person for inmate educational programs; assist with coordinating inmate educational programs with outside agencies and volunteers.

Responsibilities
  • Track and record attendance and completion data for educational programs for inmates, and provide reports to the Education Coordinator.
  • Assist in preparing, conducting, and managing educational programs under the direction of the Education Coordinator.
  • Facilitate course material to the inmate population as needed.
  • Assist with the recruitment of volunteers to conduct educational inmate programs.
  • Respond to educational inmate grievances/requests in a timely manner.
  • Interact constructively with numerous local and state individuals and organizations to include frequent presentations to various organizations.
  • All other duties as assigned.
Qualification Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must meet the prerequisites and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required. Two (2) years previous experience in related fields.

Ability to interpret rules and regulations; ability to coordinate services and programs; ability to interact with agencies and organizations outside of the Sheriff’s Office; ability to recognize problems and offer solutions; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers, outside agencies and the administration; ability to work independently often with little or no supervision or oversight.

The candidate must be proficient and knowledgeable in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite; and must be able to operate various office machines, for example, computers, calculators, printers, and copy machines.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

A teaching certificate is preferred. A Jailer Proficiency Certification from TCOLE or ability to attain same within one year of hire date.

Physical Demands

Maintain the ability to occasionally stand, walk, kneel, bend, and climb stairs during the shift. Reach, grip, and use fine dexterity. Push and pull objects. Occasionally flex the upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees. The employee must frequently lift and/or move objects weighing up to 20 pounds, such as books and stacks of records, and occasionally must lift and/or move objects weighing 100 pounds or more.

Occasionally rotate the upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing; place arms above, at, or below shoulder height. The use of vision and depth perception are required to include color vision.

Work Environment

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must be able to work, sometimes independently, in an environment with pretrial detainees and convicted felons.
