Overview
Sr. Construction Manager, Data Center Construction at Amazon Web Services (AWS) oversees the design, planning, delivery, and operation of AWS global infrastructure. This role focuses on construction of data centers, ensuring energy efficiency and cost-effectiveness, while collaborating with Operations, Networking, Controls, Security, and Commissioning teams to support customers with safe, scalable data centers.
You will join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. AWS emphasizes an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
Responsibilities- Own project scope, quality, schedule, and budget for construction of new builds or general capital projects.
- Own construction project management and oversight of construction-related activities.
- Collaborate with partner teams to build Data Centers that directly support customers.
- Lead in your discipline (construction management, building services, architectural, electrical, or mechanical engineering).
- Represent Amazon’s owner’s representative on construction sites daily, interfacing with construction trades.
- Serve as Amazon’s construction representative on multiple data center building and capital improvement sites from start to hand-off to operations.
- Direct interface with general contractors during bidding, award, execution, punch-list, and closeout phases.
- Create construction project scope and requests for proposals; conduct bid negotiations and evaluate bids with detail and accuracy.
- Manage cost, schedule, and quality while coordinating construction contractors and vendors.
- Perform project management activities including documents, submittals, RFIs, change orders, invoices, quality, scope, and schedule.
- Drive construction teams to troubleshoot and perform root-cause analysis on equipment failures.
- Support commissioning and integrated system testing and oversight.
- Support operations of installed facilities, including review of procedures, best practices, and maintenance initiatives.
- Support capital request creation and analyze/report construction progress and financials.
- Record and report key construction metrics to team members and management.
- Contribute to construction initiatives aimed at improving efficiency and resiliency, and provide constructability reviews for electrical and mechanical designs.
- Experience in construction management or construction program management of large, complex projects involving large-scale mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) plants.
- Experience in data center delivery (design, commissioning and construction), mission-critical facilities, or equivalent industrial/manufacturing facility builds.
- Experience constructing electrical engineering systems including large-scale power distribution/generation gear and mechanical cooling systems.
- Experience in project control (cost or schedule, or both) and formulating construction programs for infrastructure and mission-critical projects both on-site and in preconstruction environments.
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Construction Management or an equivalent engineering discipline +7 years of experience OR 12+ years of related construction management experience in lieu of a degree.
- Experience delivering multi-media environmental due diligence, permitting, and compliance projects with expertise in CWA 404 and NPDES permitting, groundwater protection, wastewater discharge, and resource evaluations.
- Experience in Project Controls Standards including Estimating, Cost Management, Cost Forecasting, Schedule Management, Progress Measurement, Change Management, Risk Management, WBS/CBS/SBS, Cash-Flow (VOWD), and Benchmarking.
- Experience in environmental compliance and permitting, waste management, contractual, regulatory, and liability assessments, environmental permit evaluations and applications, EIAs and water discharge requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management.
