Job Summary
WSP is currently searching for a Substation Field Engineer (Intermediate Professional/Staff Engineer) at client offices in Amarillo, TX;
Lubbock, TX; and Denver, CO. The role combines field and office work within the Substation Team, supporting projects from due diligence to construction of utility and commercial scale projects.
Provides support to technical staff, engineers, and project managers across the project lifecycle (due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction). Tasks include research, design, concept development, construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, renewable energy, and protection & control systems. Generates accurate reports and documentation, ensuring quality standards.
Key Responsibilities- Apply foundational engineering knowledge to support projects under guidance of senior engineers, following standards and best practices.
- Assist with design and engineering assignments including calculations, drawings, material selection, and evaluation of equipment and systems.
- Support project execution by coordinating with internal team members and external partners.
- Contribute to projects of small to moderate size and complexity while developing core competencies.
- Prepare and update technical documentation such as calculations, drawings, test data, reports, and specifications.
- Provide engineering support to Operations, Maintenance, Testing/Diagnostics, and Regulatory activities.
- Assist with field engineering activities including site visits, inspections, installation support, testing, commissioning, and issue resolution.
- Conduct technical research, data collection, and analysis related to design requirements and field applications.
- Verify site conditions and assist with field construction/maintenance questions.
- Participate in risk identification and documentation support for design and construction activities.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams such as project controls, construction, procurement, permitting, and document control to support delivery.
- Assist with work planning, field coordination, and permitting documentation.
- Complete required technical, safety, and role‑specific training for professional development.
- Participate in field engineering on‑call support on a limited/rotational basis.
- Perform additional duties as assigned and execute responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
- 1 to 3 years of relevant post‑education experience in an electrical engineering capacity.
- Basic exposure to engineering operations and project controls concepts.
- Foundational knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, and design/build concepts.
- Familiarity with infrastructure planning, design, rehabilitation, and construction support for new and existing facilities.
- Knowledge of engineering and electrical construction codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical skills and ability to follow engineering processes.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage assignments with attention to detail and organization.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a project team.
- Proficiency with technical writing, office automation tools, spreadsheets, engineering calculations, and standard software.
- Track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
- Willingness to work flexible schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel may be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Engineer in Training Certification.
- Prior design experience.
- Active participation in local professional practice organizations.
Expected Salary (all locations): $67,600 – $111,650.
