Position: OAG - Child Support | Child Support Officer II | 26-0572

Job Overview

Join the Office of the Attorney General's (OAG) Child Support Division (CSD) to promote responsible parenting, support children’s well‑being, and ensure families receive the assistance they deserve. As a Child Support Officer (CSO), you will conduct investigations, establish paternity, issue court orders, enforce child support, and collaborate with state agencies and community partners.

Responsibilities
  • Take case action to locate absent parents, establish paternity, enforce child/medical support, and initiate case closure.
  • Conduct detailed in‑office investigations to locate parties, verify employment, and determine assets.
  • Prepare documents related to legal and administrative actions for establishing or enforcing child support orders.
  • Negotiate lump‑sum payments from noncustodial parents who owe past‑due child/medical support.
  • Negotiate out‑of‑court settlements and agreements with parties.
  • Monitor child support cases and refer delinquent cases for appropriate enforcement action.
  • Document all case actions using agency tools, including the Children Are My Priority system (ChAMP) and case/court documents.
  • Review and maintain child support virtual files for accuracy in the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) repository.
  • Determine case eligibility for closure.
  • Attend court to assist legal staff as needed.
  • Research case information on the computer, including the ChAMP system.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of child support policies, Texas Family Law, federal regulations, and IV‑D regulations.
  • Assess child support cases to determine appropriate case action.
  • Explain Child Support Program policies, procedures, and regulations to customers.
  • Respond to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Assess the validity of complaints against the IV‑D program impartially.
  • Serve as Notary Public.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Maintain knowledge necessary to perform essential job functions.
  • Attend work regularly in compliance with the agreed‑upon work schedule.
  • Ensure security and confidentiality of sensitive or protected information.
  • Comply with all agency policies and procedures, including ethics and integrity requirements.
Qualifications
  • Education: High‑school graduation or equivalent;
    Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (preferred). Experience in child support, collections, investigations, legal assistance, or customer service may substitute for required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Skills: Interviewing and negotiating; effective oral and written communication; sound judgment and decision making; ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines; proficiency in word processing and data entry; basic mathematical computations; knowledge of Texas Family Law and IV‑D regulations; customer‑service orientation.
  • Physical/Logistical Requirements: Ability to lift and relocate up to 30 lbs; type 35 words per minute (typing test required); travel up to 15% of the time; willingness to work over 40 hours when necessary; availability for in‑person work at the designated OAG location.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree; investigative practices and techniques; proficiency in Spanish (reading, writing, and speaking).
