Position: INTELLIGENCE RESEARCH SPECIALIST

Summary

These positions are located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Positions will be filled in multiple geographic locations nationwide. Selectees may be required to relocate as a condition of employment. Placement will be based on requirements and/or needs of the agency to effectively meet goals and objectives and will not be decided until the end of the applicant process.

Duties
  • Receive and analyze highly specialized, sensitive information from multiple sources.
  • Collect and evaluate information and provide recommendations and observations regarding vulnerable points within an organization.
  • Monitor projects, plan, organize, and perform research and analysis of complex issues, and provide guidance to lower‑graded employees.
  • Plan, implement, and maintain databases to store and process technical information.
  • Collect, review, interpret, evaluate, and integrate large volumes of complex information from multiple sources pertaining to extensive, interrelated topic areas.
Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship is required.
  • Employment is subject to successful completion of a background investigation and maintenance of a security clearance.
  • Incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
  • Successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with or exempt from Selective Service.
  • Selectee will be required to serve a 1‑year probationary period (or 1‑year/2‑year trial period) during which fitness and contribution to the public interest are evaluated.
  • Submit urinalysis prior to appointment.
  • Complete the 11–week Basic Intelligence Research Specialist (BIRS) Training Course at the DEA Training Academy.
  • Sign a mobility agreement confirming willingness to accept relocation to any DEA facility.
  • Maintain a valid state driver’s license.
  • Polygraph may be required; reciprocity available for those who have previously passed a polygraph with a current or former agency.
Qualifications

Applicants must meet all required qualifications listed for GS‑12 or GS‑13 positions. Options include:

  • GS‑12:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑11 Federal grade level, including receiving and analyzing specialized intelligence information, planning research and analysis of complex issues, and developing targeted profiles.
  • GS‑13:
    One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑12 Federal grade level, including collecting, reviewing, interpreting, and integrating large volumes of intelligence data, maintaining intelligence databases, conducting strategic and tactical intelligence studies, and developing evaluation methods for large information volumes.
  • In addition, applicants must meet at least one of the following:

    • Highly technical state‑of‑the‑art skills in computer engineering, systems engineering, or computer science, with experience in Geospatial Visualization, Geographic Information Systems, Data Aggregation and Analysis, or Digital and Social Media Exploitation.
    • Foreign language aptitude with proof of certification at a satisfactory professional proficiency level or higher in reading, writing, and comprehension.
    Conditions of Employment
    • Reassignment to any DEA facility nationwide may occur; availability for relocation throughout the career is required.
    • Successful completion of the 11‑week BIRS Training Program is mandatory.
    • Background investigation, including polygraph, and periodic reinvestigations are required.
    • Compliance with DEA Standards of Conduct and Drug Policy is mandatory.
    • Participation in reasonable accommodation procedures for disabilities is available.
    • 1‑year probationary period or 2‑year trial period will evaluate fitness and contribution to the public interest.
