Employees in this classification are responsible for providing social services to patients and their families by assisting them with personal and environmental difficulties which predispose illness or interfere with obtaining maximum benefits from medical care. Persons in this position work closely with physicians and nursing staff to further their understanding of significant social and emotional factors underlying patients’ health problems. They also serve as a resource referral service in advising patients and their families about available community resources.

• Functions as a Behavioral Health Specialist, ensuring consult lines are answered within needed time frames and ensures that psychiatric consults occur within needed time frames.
• Identifies and facilitates coordination with an appropriate mental health professional (e.g., therapists, child/adolescent/reproductive psychiatrists) based on the level of care needed (e.g., medication management, therapy recommendations, available resources, etc.).
• Offers guidance to providers on assessing the mental and behavioral health status and needs of patients.
• Offers information and resources to providers as needed for children, adolescents, and their parents/caregivers including skill‑based interventions (e.g., emotion regulation skills, behavioral parenting skills, distress tolerance skills, etc.).
• Assists the provider in developing a behavioral plan based on information provided through the consult to CPAN‑PeriPAN.
