Employees in this classification provide support in an assigned research laboratory conducting specified phases of research projects. Performs work independently and is responsible for developing new procedures and techniques to be utilized in the laboratory and in experiments, and new applications for standard procedures and techniques. Work is performed under usual laboratory conditions. Some hazards may be present due to use of radioactive,carcinogenic or other potentially harmful substances.

Responsibilities also include ensuring overall cleanliness of the laboratory and laboratory equipment, and ordering and maintaining an adequate stock of necessary supplies. May instruct or direct work of subordinate laboratory personnel.

• Assist P.I. in maintaining a supportive and collegial working environment that fosters the exchange of ideas and enhancesscientific progress.
• Recording procedures and data in the laboratory notebook.
• Establish and maintain laboratory records (Expenditures,budget, equipment, manuals, and records, animal use records,reagents and experimental protocols, material safety data sheets,databases, biohazardous materials).
• Conduct and/or supervise laboratory support activities(ordering supplies, preparing solutions, washing and sterilizingsurgical instruments, etc.).
• Assist P.I., postdocs, and students in miscellaneous tasks(Training new students/employees in experimental procedures,library work, preparation of talks, publications and grants).
• Design, execution, and training of new students/employees inanimal care (safe & humane handling and restraint of animals;substance administration to include intramuscular, intraperitoneal,subcutaneous, and intravenous, as well as gavage; collection ofblood samples, sedation, anesthesia, and analgesia; methods ofeuthanasia).
• Maintain animal xenograft experiments and daily animal rounds.
