Sign Shop Technician

The TxDOT Support Services Division is seeking a highly motivated individual to fill the position of Sign Shop Technician at the Regional Sign Shop in Lubbock, TX. The Regional Sign Shop is dedicated to both individual and team efforts in the manufacturing and distribution of signs across the state of Texas, ensuring the safety of our road network. This role requires a strong work ethic, integrity, and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Position

Description:

Performs entry level work in the fabrication and repair of traffic signs and related work for the Support Services Division in a regional sign shop. Work includes maintaining inventory and records of signs and materials and using specialized tools and equipment related to sign manufacturing. Employees at this level perform assignments following specific instructions and standard practices and are subject to frequent review by the immediate supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Cuts stencils.
  • Draws signs utilizing computer graphics software according to specifications and the sign manual.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Makes sign blanks.
  • Operates letter cutting machine.
  • Performs and maintains inventory of signs.
  • Tests materials to ensure compliance with minimum standards.
  • Reviews sign designs to ensure compliance with the Manual Uniform Traffic Control Devices standards and specifications and approval of the Traffic Safety Division.
  • Issues signs to maintenance sections and district offices.
  • Operates a forklift to move signs and related materials.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

No Experience required. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent).

Licenses and

Certifications:

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Competencies:

Some knowledge of:

  • Computer-aided drafting and design systems
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Traffic Control Standard Sheets
  • Standard Highway Sign Designs for Texas
  • Computer graphic software
  • Inventory/stock control procedures

Some skill in:

  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals
  • Making and repairing signs
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Safely using, operating, and maintaining applicable equipment
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others

Physical Requirements and

Working Conditions:

  • Subject to noise
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
  • Medium work:
