Purpose and Scope:The professional registered nurse Outpatient RN CAP 1 is an entry level designation into the Clinical Advancement Program (CAP). This position is accountable for providing and coordinating clinically competent care, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for an assigned group of patients. It may include delegating appropriate tasks to direct patient care staff such as RNs, LVN/LPNs, and Patient Care Technicians.
As part of the End Stage Kidney Disease (ESKD) healthcare team, this role involves decision-making, teaching, leadership, and quality improvement activities to enhance patient outcomes and facility operations.
- Perform all essential functions under the supervision of the Supervisor, with guidance from the Clinical Educator, Preceptor, or in collaboration with other RNs.
- Collect and analyze patient data before, during, and after hemodialysis treatment, document in the medical record, and adjust treatment plans as needed.
- Assess and document patient/family learning needs, providing ongoing education.
- Coordinate and deliver safe and effective hemodialysis therapy in collaboration with care staff.
- Administer prescribed medications or follow approved algorithms, documenting medical justification and effectiveness.
- Initiate or assist with emergency responses.
- Serve as a resource, participate in staff training, and orient new staff.
- Ensure laboratory procedures are correctly performed and reschedule missed collections.
- Update nursing assessments and care plans collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team.
- Inform patients about transplant and treatment options.
- Complete CAP requirements to advance.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Working Conditions:
These include heavy lifting, patient mobility assistance, prolonged standing, and potential exposure to infectious materials, typical of healthcare settings. The role may require travel and working in various locations with similar physical demands.
Supervision:Oversight of care technicians and LPNs/RNs as a Team Leader or Nurse in Charge, contingent upon meeting specific training and experience requirements.
Education and Licensure:- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Valid state licensure.
- CPR/BLS certification.
- Entry level for RNs with less than 2 years of nephrology nursing experience.
- Preferred: chronic/acute hemodialysis experience.

Addendum:International RN
Educational requirements include a Bachelor’s degree, appropriate licensure or certification, and compliance with state practice requirements.
