Position: Registered Nurse (RN) Staff Nurse Wound Care

The RN Staff Nurse, Wound and Ostomy Services provides professional nursing care to patients and families with certain integumentary, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary system disorders and diagnosis Full Time Monday
- Friday 8-5 UMC Health System Lubbock, Texas

Job Specific Responsibilities
  • Serves as a resource and consultant for other members of the hospital and nursing staff in the assessment, planning and implementation for the direct care of wounds, ostomy, and continence related issues
  • Implement and evaluate pressure injury prevention methods and management per the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel guidelines
  • Responsible for data collection of hospital acquired pressure injuries as well as reporting to National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators
  • Interacts with physicians, nurses, and department leadership team to provide wound care/ostomy plan of care, resolve problems and optimize resources
  • Provides support to patients and their family members/caregivers as needed regarding ostomy care, wound care, and pressure injury prevention;
    Provides recommended evaluation on pressure injuries acquired during the hospital stay
  • Serve as member of the Skin Care Committee and oversee the Pressure Injury & Restraint Prevalence Study held monthly with data input into the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators
  • Provide education to Ostomy patients admitted as inpatient and as needed post discharge and wound care providers in the organization
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing
  • +5 years of clinical experience, preferably in an acute hospital setting
  • +2 years as Preceptor/Charge Nurse
  • Prior experience with wounds, pressure injuries, and ostomy management
Required Licensures/Certifications/Registrations
  • Certification in CWOCN, CWON, CWCA, or CWS
  • Valid license from Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners or multi state compact license required
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills necessary to interact in a professional manner with peers, supervisors, physicians, administrators, and patients
  • Knowledge of general nursing practices, skin/wound care, pressure injury prevention/management, and ostomy care
  • Effective communicator, verbally and in writing
  • Computer and systems competency in the following areas:
    Entering, retrieving, assembling, organizing, using, and analyzing data. Integrates diverse sources of data, including maintaining statistical reports.
Interaction with Other Departments and Other Relationships

This position requires close interaction with other departments, including but not limited to medical and nursing staff, ancillaries, and administration in order to facilitate a quality multidisciplinary approach to patient care.

Physical Capabilities

Work is of medium demand. Walking and standing most of the time on duty. Occasional lifting of patients with assistance is required. Fine motor skills for data entry and near visual acuity for surveillance. Talking and hearing are essential for communication. Near visual acuity required to work with charts and adequately assess patients.

Environmental Working Conditions

Works in a well-lighted, heated, and ventilated building. Hours may vary to accommodate needs in the department as prescribed by the philosophy of the hospital. May work units other than the assigned one with orientation. Exposure to blood borne pathogens is high risk.
