Job Responsibilities

  • Operate various types of heavy equipment engaged in the construction, repair, or maintenance of county roads and bridges; operate recycler; conduct routine maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment; transport materials to and from work sites; and direct traffic at construction sites as needed.
  • Demonstrate equipment operation techniques to equipment operators.
  • Assist with patching, tamping, packing, and leveling dirt, asphalt, or other materials during pothole repair, reconstruction of road shoulders, and crack sealing.
  • Operate light and heavy equipment such as motor grader, wheel loader, dozer, asphalt distributor, roller, water truck, recycler, mowers, shredders, rotary broom, chip spreader, rough carpenter, vibrating and steel wheel rollers, backhoe, fencing erector, road sweeper, concrete finisher, and other equipment used in the construction and repair of county roads at an advanced level.
  • Complete required paperwork, forms and records in a timely manner.
  • Assist with preparing work zones and performing traffic control; flag motorists to warn them of obstacles or repair work ahead.
  • Perform routine inspection checking oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc., and make appropriate adjustments to ensure vehicles are in proper condition prior to operating.
  • Perform basic vehicle maintenance tasks and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or repairs to supervisor.
  • Drive a tractor‑trailer truck for hauling materials to construction or repair sites (CDL required).
  • Perform welding duties, including welding parts together and repairing broken or cracked parts.
  • Operate front‑end loader or track loader to load/unload materials and equipment.
  • Use hand tools for digging trenches, filling excavations, mixing concrete, cutting down trees and brush, removing driftwood and debris from culverts, clearing brush, and cleaning drainage ditches.
  • Replace and repair signs and signposts, including welding and cutting signs and metals as needed.
  • Work independently to complete assigned tasks, and may lead the work of other equipment operators.
  • Perform other work as assigned.
Qualification Requirements

High school graduation or its equivalent, plus at least nine years of experience; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Prefer CDL driver’s license with endorsements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Safe operation of equipment and understanding of Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to such motorized equipment.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, tools, and diverse equipment used in various work tasks, and ability to apply the correct method to job situations.
  • Ability to learn the operation of new equipment or processes.
  • Ability to obtain any required certifications.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbally and written instructions.
  • Ability to complete work projects on time and effectively.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with co‑workers; ability to identify and communicate issues and solutions to supervisor.
  • Tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather.
  • Maintain a Texas driver’s license applicable to job responsibilities and a good driving record.
  • Maintain and use personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Maintain attendance and punctuality.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
  • Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
  • Frequently bend, stoop, squat, lie down, and walk.
  • Frequently lift and/or move objects weighing from 20 pounds up to 100 pounds, such as tools and equipment.
  • Operate powerful equipment which also causes vibrations.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.
