Supervises the activities of workers engaged in a variety of public works maintenance and construction activities.

  • Supervise laborers and skilled construction and maintenance workers on maintenance, repair, and construction of public works projects;
  • Instruct the crew on the repair methods to be used and ensure that safe procedures are followed;
  • Transport crew members, tools, and materials to job locations;
  • Make time and material estimates;
  • Assist the supervisor in planning work and make work assignments;
  • Ensure that machines and equipment are available and in proper operating condition;
  • Write daily reports and keep time cards;
  • Perform related duties as directed.

Completion of a high school diploma or the equivalent. with an additional three to five years of experience in public works construction and maintenance, including one year of experience as crew leader; or any combination of relevant education and experience which provides the following:

Physical exam required

Valid current Commercial Driver's License
Water:

Infrastructure: This position has been determined to have close contact with, or control of Critical Infrastructure components. This position is subject to extensive background checks and random drug screening. **
* Water (Pipeline Maintenance)
- Possession of a Texas Class "A" Commercial Drivers license upon hire. Possession of, or ability to obtain within twelve months at least a Class "D" water distribution license with the ability to obtain a Class "C" water distribution license with three years.
Streets - Possession of a Texas Class "A" Commercial Drivers license. Prefer experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator.
Wastewater/Waste
- Possession of a Texas Class "B" Drivers license.

Class C Waste Water License or a Waste Water Collection II License or able to obtain within 12 months.

Knowledge of:
  • The materials, methods, and equipment used in public works maintenance; hazards and safety precautions at work.
Ability to:
  • Plan, supervise, and assign work of a large number of employees;
  • Determine the effectiveness of and need for public works maintenance;
  • Make time and material estimates;
  • Establish and maintain effective working and public relationships;
  • Interpret plan specifications;
  • Communicate effectively with others;
  • Possess certification if required by the Texas Natural Resources Conservation Commission.
Physical Requirements:
  • Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds, occasionally lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand and walk during the shift.
  • Frequently bend and kneel during the shift.
  • Frequently push and pull objects.

    Frequently flex upper trunk forward at the waist and partially at the knees.
  • Occasionally move body in a crawling motion.
  • Rotate upper trunk to the left or right while sitting or standing.
  • Place arms above, at, or below shoulder height.
  • Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to operate a vehicle.
