Overview
Deputy District Engineer (2601258). TxDOT's Lubbock District is looking for a Deputy District Engineer to work out of our Lubbock District Office. This position helps lead a team of almost 400 individuals whose job duties vary from entry level technical field staff to professional engineering directors. The district covers 17 counties in the surrounding Lubbock area. The population in our district is almost 500,000 with an estimated 11 million miles driven daily.
The district focuses on safe and efficient movement of people and goods in an economically diverse area of West Texas.

- Assists in management and engineering oversight of all activities in a geographically specific area in Texas (district), including transportation planning, operations, right-of-way acquisition, engineering design, construction, inspection and maintenance of highways and bridges, environmental functions, general aviation airports, public transit systems, state park roads and other state agency facilities, and associated administrative and support activities. Reports to the District Engineer. Exercises professional and independent judgment in overseeing district programs.
Works requires extensive contact with business and community leaders; contractors; special interest or trade groups; governmental and transportation officials at the local, state, federal or international levels; the media and private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence. - Acts as consultant to other staff members on administration, programming, planning, construction, design, environmental, maintenance, traffic and right-of-way functions.
- Assists in the development of work programs to meet transportation needs within the district including transportation planning, design, environmental, construction, maintenance and traffic control requirements.
- Assists the District Engineer in maintaining an effective and coordinated operation of the district and makes individual and public contacts in the interest of the Department.
- Assists with engineering/problem resolution encountered in transportation planning/location, design, construction, operation/maintenance of bridges, aviation airports, public transit systems, state park roads and other state agency infrastructure.
- Executes special assignments and prepares reports.
- May assist in directing operations of a regional surveillance, communication and traffic control center involving local agency partnerships, which manage highway and street operations.
- May direct and oversee district safety and legal office activities.
- May supervise professionals in specific district functional areas of responsibility.
- Oversees all district activities in the absence of the District Engineer.
- Serves on district/division and agency committees.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
