Overview
Intern Engineering Support - District Maintenance (2601689) at the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Lufkin District. This paid internship is for students enrolled in engineering or related science programs to gain hands-on transportation engineering experience under licensed professionals.
Responsibilities- Assist in transportation engineering support work including construction or maintenance inspection, structural construction or maintenance, laboratory work, landscaping, surveying, data collection, and operation of data collection equipment.
- Apply instructions from the supervisor to perform entry-level engineering support tasks and assist with routine data entry, spreadsheet and database development, and basic statistical analysis.
- Inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications for roadways, bridges, airports, traffic signals, and related highway structures.
- Inspect materials, equipment, and production procedures to ensure Department specifications; move items related to these duties as required.
- Obtain material samples for analysis and assist with routine laboratory testing, including operation and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
- Perform survey work (e.g., positioning, surveying data collection) and gather traffic and accident data.
- Prepare base sheets, details, specifications and estimates for landscape construction projects; prepare worksheets and inspection reports.
- Process construction-related documents and maintain construction project records; scan and file airport drawings and related documents.
- Use drafting equipment and/or computer-aided drafting to support project needs; perform related calculations.
- Other job responsibilities as assigned.
Must be enrolled in an engineering or related science degree program in an accredited college or university accepted by TX PELS.
Other ConditionsMust be at least 16 years of age; must be a student currently enrolled in high school or any institution of higher education, including trade/vocational schools. Employees at least 18 years of age with a valid driver’s license may be assigned driving duties and may use power tools.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions- Required to wear protective hard hat and other personal protective equipment.
- Subject to outside environmental conditions; no dedicated weather protection.
- Medium work: lift up to 50 lbs; frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
- Balancing, walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces; kneeling; reaching; standing for prolonged periods.
- Close visual acuity for inspection of small defects/parts and use of measurement devices; operate machines such as drill presses, power saws, and mills.
- Position may require a pre-employment physical; drug testing may be required for safety impact positions with random testing.
