Job Description

Reports to: Principal

Supervises: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.

Purpose: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Management of Instructional Time
    The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Management of Student Behavior
    The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern the handling of routine administrative matters; defines rules for verbal participation, classroom movement, and non‑instructional behavior; monitors student behavior during all activities and transitions; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently while maintaining student dignity.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Presentation
    The teacher reviews previous materials, introduces the lesson and specific learning objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents concepts with understandable language, provides examples and demonstrations, assigns tasks with a high success rate, asks appropriate questions, conducts lessons at a brisk pace, manages transitions efficiently, and summarizes the main point(s) at the end.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
    The teacher sets clear, firm standards and due dates, circulates during class work to check performance, uses oral, written, and other work products to assess progress, and poses questions clearly and one at a time.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Instructional Feedback
    The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work to encourage growth, offers prompt feedback on assignments, affirms correct responses, and gives sustaining feedback after incorrect or no responses by probing, repeating, offering clues, or allowing more time.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Facilitating Instruction
    The teacher has an instructional plan that aligns with school and system‑wide goals, uses diagnostic information to develop and revise objectives, maintains accurate records, matches objectives to student needs at appropriate difficulty levels, and uses resources to support the program.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Interacting Within the Educational Environment
    The teacher treats all students fairly and equitably, and interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and the community.
  • MAJOR FUNCTION:
    Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
    The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, adheres to laws, policies, and regulations, and follows a professional development plan demonstrating growth.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS Performs other related work as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE Degree in education or a related area that qualifies for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Physical Requirements: Ability to use various equipment and classroom tools, lift and move objects, and perform light work duties.
  • Data Conception: Ability to compare, judge, and analyze data and characteristics.
  • Interpersonal Communication: Ability to convey and exchange information orally and in writing, including receiving instructions.
  • Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, forms, and instructional materials in prescribed formats.
  • Intelligence: Ability to apply logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
  • Verbal Aptitude: Ability to record, deliver information, explain procedures, and follow written or oral instructions in professional contexts.
