Job DescriptionREPORTS TO: Principal
SUPERVISES: May coordinate and direct the activities of teacher assistants.
PURPOSE: To plan, organize and present instruction and instructional environments that help students learn subject matter and skills that will contribute to their educational and social development.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESA. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Management of Instructional Time
The teacher has materials, supplies, and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of the lesson or instructional activity; gets the class started quickly; gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson; maintains a high level of student time‑on‑task.
B. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Management of Student Behavior
The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern routine administrative matters, student verbal participation, talk during different activities, and student movement; frequently monitors behavior; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently, while maintaining student dignity.
C. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Instructional Presentation
The teacher begins with a review of previous materials, introduces the lesson and objectives, speaks fluently and precisely, presents using concepts and language understandable to students, provides examples, assigns tasks, asks appropriate questions, conducts at brisk pace, manages transitions, ensures assignments are clear, and summarizes main points.
D. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Instructional Monitoring of Student Performance
The teacher maintains clear work standards, circulates during class to check performance, uses oral, written, and other products to check progress, poses questions clearly and one at a time.
E. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Instructional Feedback
The teacher provides feedback on in‑class work and out‑of‑class work; affirms correct responses; provides sustaining feedback after incorrect or no response by probing, repeating, giving clues or allowing more time.
F. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Facilitating Instruction
The teacher has an instructional plan compatible with school and system‑wide curricular goals, uses diagnostic data, maintains accurate records, aligns objectives and strategies, and uses resources to support the program.
G. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Interacting Within the Educational Environment
The teacher treats all students fairly, interacts effectively with students, co‑workers, parents, and community.
H. MAJOR FUNCTION:
Performing Non‑Instructional Duties
The teacher carries out non‑instructional duties as assigned, follows laws and policies, and demonstrates professional development growth.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEDegree in education or a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Physical Requirements: Must use a variety of classroom tools; exert negligible force; consistent with Light Work.

- Interpersonal Communication: Ability to speak, listen, and convey information.
- Language Ability: Ability to read and prepare correspondence, reports, materials.
- Intelligence: Ability to apply logical thinking, define problems, interpret instructions.

- Numerical Aptitude: Ability to utilize mathematical formulas, perform calculations, and apply statistical principles.
- Form/Spatial Aptitude: Ability to inspect items for proper dimensions.
- Motor Coordination: Ability to coordinate hands and eyes accurately.
- Manual Dexterity: Ability to handle items and tools with minimal coordination.
