Career Specialist

The Career Specialist develops, coordinates, and delivers comprehensive career development services that assist prospective, current, and former students in identifying educational and career goals aligned with workforce needs. The position provides career advising, assessments, employment preparation, internship coordination, transfer planning, employer engagement, and career programming that supports student persistence, completion, and successful transition into employment or continued education.

Detailed Work Activities
  • Provide individual and group career advising to prospective, current, and former students.
  • Administer and interpret career assessments to support career exploration, educational planning, and informed decision-making.
  • Assist students with career exploration, major selection, and identification of career pathways aligned with their interests, strengths, and goals.
  • Develop individualized Career Success Plans that identify educational, career-readiness, and employment goals.
  • Provide résumé, cover letter, job-search, and interview preparation assistance.
  • Coordinate career-readiness workshops, employer presentations, and other career development programming.
  • Develop and maintain employer partnerships that expand internship, employment, networking, and work-based learning opportunities for students.
  • Coordinate career fairs, transfer fairs, networking events, and related student engagement activities.
  • Collaborate with Academic Advising, Admissions, Financial Aid, Workforce Development, NCWorks, faculty, employers, and other College and community partners.
  • Connect students with appropriate internship, work-based learning, transfer, and employment resources.
  • Maintain accurate career services records and prepare assessment, participation, and outcome reports.
  • Use career and labor-market information to help students understand employment trends, workforce needs, and career opportunities.
  • Promote student persistence and completion through intentional career planning and connection of academic goals to career outcomes.
  • Maintain confidentiality and protect student information in accordance with FERPA and College policies and procedures.
  • Participate in College events, committees, professional development, and other student-success initiatives as assigned.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position as assigned by the Dean of Counseling Services.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in Counseling, Higher Education, Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, Student Affairs, Career Development, or a related field.
  • Two years of relevant experience in career services, advising, workforce development, student services, human resources, employer relations, or a related area.
  • Demonstrated communication, organizational, interpersonal, and technology skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's degree in a related field.
  • Experience working in a community college or higher education environment.
  • Experience with career assessments, employer engagement, internship or work-based learning coordination, and career management software.
  • Knowledge of North Carolina workforce resources, NCWorks, and regional labor-market needs.

  • Knowledge of career development theory, student development, career exploration, and employment-readiness practices.
  • Knowledge of labor-market information and the ability to connect educational pathways with workforce opportunities.
  • Ability to administer and appropriately interpret career assessments.
  • Strong career coaching, advising, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Ability to develop employer and community partnerships.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate workshops, career fairs, networking events, and other programs.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and project-management skills.
  • Ability to present effectively to students, employees, employers, and community partners.
  • Ability to use career management software, student information systems, and standard office technology.
  • Ability to maintain confidential student records and comply with FERPA and College requirements.
  • Commitment to student success, workforce preparation, service excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
