Position Overview
Department of Transportation – Division of State Highway Administration – Assistant Resident Engineer (Engineer I, NS) – Position Number (Grade NC16). Position located in the Lumberton Resident Engineer’s Office.
Responsibilities- Supervise employees engaged in stakeout and inspection of roads and structures during contract construction.
- Read and interpret plan and contract specifications, ensuring compliance with standards and specifications.
- Prepare monthly and final estimates and maintain contract records throughout project life.
- Communicate daily with contractors and subordinate personnel to ensure contract compliance.
- Train subordinates, coordinate activities, and administer contracts where applicable.
- Ensure a safe working environment; must wear mandatory safety toe shoes.
- Must be able to legally operate a state vehicle.
- Work in extreme temperatures and uneven terrain for extended periods.
- Proficiency in plan reading, highway engineering calculations, and use of survey instruments.
- Proficiency in personal computers and contract administration software.
- Ability to understand, explain, and administer contracts, interpret plan provisions and specifications.
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong organizational and supervisory skills.
- Four‑year degree in engineering.
- EIT or Professional Engineer.
- Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts.
- Experience directing, assisting, or training sub‑ordinate employees.
- Experience administering contracts.
- Knowledge of civil engineering principles and construction practices.
Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an accredited institution or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates may qualify through an equivalent combination of education and experience as specified in the Education and Experience Equivalency Guide.
Special QualificationMay require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
