Travel Nurse RN - Medical-Surgical
1-Year minimum experience will be accepted. First-time travelers are considered. Permanent staff must wait 2 years before returning as a traveler. Travelers cannot live within a 75-mile radius of the facility. Patient types include but are not limited to: CHF, diabetes, dialysis, COPD, COVID, ETOH withdrawal, IVDA. Telemetry – remote monitoring with tele tech 24/7. Will not have to read telemetry strips.
Tele tech will notify RN of rhythm change. General surgical patients. Patient ratios: 1:5-6, can flex up to 7 in surge times (do not go above 1:7) – working on getting this down by hiring more staff. Required certifications: BLS, CPI or MOAB – must have prior to start. ACLS (preferred).
Skills required:
IV insertion, trach management, chest tube management, NG tube placement and management, feeding tubes, foley placement and management, wound care, dressing changes, central line management. Floating:
All medical-surgical units, holding/overflow units. Travelers float in rotation with perm staff. Support on the unit: CNA (ratio is 1:8-9, can be as high as 1:12). CNAs may be assigned as a sitter. Hospitalist, 24/7 RT in-house. 24/7 HUC who are also trained CNAs during the day. Charge nurse takes patient load. Phlebotomy does most peripheral draws, nurses will have to draw all central lines.
Charting system/equipment: EPIC, BD Alaris IV pumps, Omnicell (medication dispensing). Orientation: 1 day of hospital orientation (get badge, net learning, 4-hour epic (if needed)), 1 day of unit orientation with staff nurse. Scheduling:

Clinical to approve up to 7 days off. Need unit manager approval for greater than 7 days. Get manager approval for holiday time off:
Travelers are not typically scheduled on holidays, but are often utilized the day before/after holiday. No call required. Overtime – must be approved by CNO. Modified self scheduling – they can put in their preferred schedule but no guarantees it will be accommodated. Scrub color:
Ceil Blue, Royal Blue and/or White. Attendance is extremely important on this unit. Look for someone who can commit to their schedule and be reliable to work their shifts.
Soft skills:
kindness/understanding toward ETOH and IVDA. North side has ability to visually monitor (cameras) 6 specific rooms at nurse's desk.
