Job Description

Thank you for considering employment in the Lunenburg Public Schools.

Long-Term Substitute:
Special Education Teacher – ACHIEVE / Life Skills Program

Lunenburg High School (Grades 9–12) 1079 Mass Ave, Lunenburg, MA 01462

About the Position: A Perfect Short-Term Opportunity (Great for Retirees!)

Are you a retired educator looking to stay connected to the classroom without the full-year commitment, or a certified teacher looking for a rewarding short-term placement? Lunenburg High School is seeking a dedicated Long-Term Substitute to cover a maternity leave for our wonderful ACHIEVE / Life Skills Program.

This position is a beautifully self-contained fall assignment, running from August 31, 2026, through November 20, 2026.

Why this classroom is a fantastic environment:

Predictable & Friendly Dynamic:
This classroom does not focus on students with behavioral difficulties. Instead, it serves a sweet, hardworking group of 9 students who need academic modifications.

Strong Staffing Support:
You will lead a well-supported classroom of 8 students, working alongside 2 dedicated paraprofessionals who know the students and routines well.

Balanced Instructional Approach:
The curriculum blends life skills and functional academics in a substantially separate setting, while also supporting students with the necessary modifications to participate in general education classes as much as possible.

General Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have the knowledge, skills, and ability to:

  • Provide, design, and adapt instructional programs (across core academics and/or functional life skills) to meet the unique needs of students in a small group setting.
  • Maintain a positive, welcoming, and predictable learning environment that encourages independence and dignity.
  • Supervise and collaborate effectively with the 2 classroom paraprofessionals to keep daily routines running smoothly.
  • Partner with general education staff to ensure students are successfully included in mainstream high school settings as outlined in their IEPs.
Qualifications & Requirements

Appropriate Massachusetts Educator License required (Special

Education:

Moderate or Severe Disabilities preferred).

Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with administration, therapists, and team members.

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

Rates of Pay

Lunenburg Public Schools offers a competitive tiered daily rate for long-term assignments:

  • Days 1–15: $112 / day
  • Days 16–40: $127 / day
  • Days 41+: $260 / day (

    Note:

For this nearly 3-month assignment, the days in November will qualify for this highest rate!)

Thank you for considering employment with the Lunenburg Public Schools. We look forward to welcoming you to our high school team for the fall!
