Job Description

The Counselor, Middle School, is responsible for coordinating and implementing a comprehensive school counseling program to include academic advisement, personal/social counseling, career development, and parent/community involvement.

Responsibilities
  • Provide an ongoing program of individual, small group, and large group counseling services in the areas of academic advisement, career awareness, and social/personal development per the national standards established by the American School Counselor Association.
  • Consult and work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, school personnel, district personnel, parents, and community agencies to meet the counseling and educational planning needs of middle school students, including school wide needs.
  • Interpret and utilize school records, including cognitive, aptitude, and achievement tests, for educational planning; review and evaluate student records and transcripts.
  • Address individual student needs and refer students to appropriate school and community resources as necessary.
  • Provide preventive and responsive services, including crisis counseling as needed, and address student mental health needs as appropriate.
  • Facilitate the involvement of parents in the education of their students, including assisting in parent/teacher/counselor conferences.
  • Assist students in developing self‑understanding, self‑acceptance, and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Provide information about appropriate community resources.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned.

Job Knowledge, Planning & Organization
  • Competent in required job skills and knowledge; ability to learn and apply new skills.

  • Prioritize and plan work activities; use time efficiently and set goals and objectives.
Technical Skills
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office.
  • Basic mathematical skills – addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rates, ratios, percent, and interpreting bar graphs.
  • Reasoning ability to solve practical problems in less standardized situations.
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Physical Demands
  • Standing, walking, sitting, handling, keyboarding, talking, and hearing.
  • Lift up to 10 pounds; reach with both dominant and non‑dominant hand; overhead activities.
  • Work in a moderate noise environment (noise intensity:
    3).
  • Travel to various school sites, work locations, and community organizations throughout the district.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations
  • Florida Professional Educator Certificate:
    Guidance and Counseling (Grades PK‑12) required.
