Communications Dispatcher

The Communications Dispatcher is a vital role in the Emergency Management & Community Engagement team, responsible for operating a multi‑channel radio system, handling emergency and non‑emergency calls, and managing dispatch information using CAD, VCIN, and NLETS systems.

Responsibilities
  • Operate multi‑channel radio system, multi‑line telephone system, and computer‑aided dispatch terminal.
  • Receive and transmit all information promptly, accurately, and professionally.
  • Answer emergency and non‑emergency calls for service on a multi‑line telephone system.
  • Enter and retrieve information through CAD, VCIN, and NLETS.
  • Respond to inquiries, complaints, and secure emergency assistance in a timely, efficient manner.
  • Contact and request services from wreckers, EMS, fire, law enforcement, and maintenance/University call‑out services.
  • File messages properly and maintain accurate logs and records of all radio transmissions and telephone calls.
  • Verify and enter information in all Liberty University Department call‑out manuals.
  • Notify or correct errors in system usage promptly.
  • Stay abreast of current laws relating to law enforcement at local, state, and federal levels.
  • Maintain knowledge of disaster protocol, research and planning, and law‑enforcement, fire, and EMS dispatch protocol.
  • Qualifications & Competencies
    • At least 21 years old.
    • Current first aid and CPR certifications.
    • Industry knowledge in emergency communications operations.
    • Experience as a dispatcher preferred.
    • Ability to complete dispatcher certification within 1 year of appointment.
    • Clear, concise communication under stress.
    • Strong analytical and judgment skills.
    • Excellent computer and organizational skills.
    • Ability to lift 10 pounds or fewer regularly.
    • No convictions for felonies or crimes of moral turpitude; pass random drug testing.
    Work Environment

    Full‑time position located in Lynchburg, Virginia – in‑office.
