Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Principal or designee, the High School Social Sciences Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in social sciences. The teacher fosters critical thinking, civic responsibility, and analytical skills while creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for students.
This role contributes to student success academically and socially by promoting historical understanding, civic engagement, and the ability to analyze social, political, and economic systems, while adhering to School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws.
The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can:
- Deliver standards-based social sciences instruction aligned to Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Promote student understanding of history, government, geography, and economics.
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Prepare students to be informed, responsible, and engaged citizens.
- Support the division’s mission to serve every child, every day.
- Plan and implement developmentally appropriate social sciences lessons aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Teach a range of high school social sciences courses, which may include World History, U.S. History, Government, Geography, or Economics, as assigned.
- Use a variety of instructional strategies to develop students’ critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation of historical and contemporary issues.
- Incorporate primary and secondary sources, discussions, and inquiry-based learning to deepen student understanding.
- Assess student performance through formative and summative assessments; use results to adjust instruction.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic needs of students.
- Integrate technology and current events to enhance student understanding of social sciences concepts.
- Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and assessment data.
- Collaborate with colleagues to align curriculum, share best practices, and support student achievement.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress and expectations.
- Participate in professional development to maintain licensure and improve instructional practices.

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
- Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with History and Social Sciences endorsement.
- Experience teaching high school-aged students is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of social sciences curriculum and instructional best practices.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
