Position SummaryUnder the general direction of the Principal or designee, the Special Education Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, specially designed instruction to students with disabilities across grade levels (K–12). The teacher fosters academic growth, independence, and social-emotional development while creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment tailored to individual student needs.
This role contributes to student success academically and socially by implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promoting access to the general education curriculum, and ensuring compliance with School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws, including special education regulations.
The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can:
- Deliver specially designed instruction aligned to student IEP goals and Virginia Standards of Learning.
- Support students with diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs.
- Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
- Promote student independence, self-advocacy, and social-emotional growth.
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, state regulations, and division policies.
- Support the division’s mission to serve every child, every day.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide specially designed instruction to meet individual student needs in various instructional settings (inclusion, resource, or self-contained).
- Adapt and modify curriculum, materials, and instructional strategies to ensure access to the general education curriculum.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to support inclusive practices and student success.
- Assess student performance through formal and informal measures; use data to adjust instruction and IEP goals.
- Maintain accurate and compliant documentation, including IEPs, progress reports, eligibility documentation, and service logs.
- Participate in IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, and other required conferences with staff and families.
- Implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and support positive behavior strategies as needed.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state special education laws, timelines, and procedural safeguards.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding student progress, services, and supports.
- Coordinate with related service providers (e.g., speech therapists, occupational therapists, school psychologists) to support student needs.
- Participate in professional development to maintain licensure and enhance instructional and compliance practices.

- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
- Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with Special Education endorsement.
- Experience working with students with disabilities across a range of needs is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of special education laws, IEP development, and instructional best practices.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
