Position: Librarian I - Cataloging Librarian

Overview

Performs professional library work within the Technical Services Department of the public library system. The ideal candidate is technologically proficient, analytical, and adaptable, with the ability to troubleshoot issues, evaluate emerging technologies, and develop effective solutions. This position works collaboratively across departments to ensure efficient technical services operations and to support the evolving needs of a modern public library.

Essential duties and responsibilities
  • Catalog, classify, and maintain bibliographic records for library materials in all formats, including print, audiovisual, electronic, and digital resources, using established cataloging standards and best practices
  • Manage and maintain the library’s online catalog, ensuring accurate bibliographic records for all materials
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement improvements to cataloging procedures, technical services workflows, and system processes as technologies and standards evolve
  • Collaborate with Technical Services staff, the Collection Development Librarian, and public service staff to ensure timely processing and discoverability of library materials
  • Assist with the physical processing, maintenance, and repair of library materials as needed
  • Analyze system reports, identify issues, and resolve discrepancies related to bibliographic records, circulation, and technical services operations
  • Compile, analyze, and report statistical data using vendor-provided reporting tools and other library management systems
  • Represent the library as an active participant in the local TLC Users Group, communicating system updates and initiatives to library leadership
  • Participate in departmental planning and library-wide projects; contribute to outreach activities and special events as needed
  • Stay current with developments in cataloging standards, metadata practices, ILS, and emerging technology trends through professional development
  • Other duties as assigned
Supervisory responsibilities

Will supervise, train, and evaluate support staff.

Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited institution
  • General knowledge of modern library service principles and methods, including automated systems, cataloging, and digital resources
  • 3‑5 years of experience with a variety of digital library systems; experience with the Library Company database preferred
  • Language skills: ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to present information effectively; second language highly desirable
  • Mathematical skills: ability to calculate figures, percentages, and apply basic algebra, geometry, fractions, ratios, and proportions
  • Reasoning ability: define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; interpret technical instructions and deal with variables
  • Interpersonal skills: solid conflict resolution skills and ability to work with citizens, vendors, and City employees
  • Other requirements: must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management training within 90 days of employment; may be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training
