Essential duties include demonstrating a solid commitment to customer service, developing and maintaining community relationships, planning and directing programs and services, hiring, training, and supervising staff, setting and upholding departmental goals, working with collection development, providing reference services, staying attuned to popular trends in adult literature, compiling statistics on program attendance, attending professional library conferences, and collaborating with other staff members.
Additional duties may include working nights and weekends, collaborating on special projects, and performing special assignments during emergencies.
Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees, planning and assigning work, appraising performance, rewarding and disciplining employees, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
Minimum education and experience required include a master's degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited library school, 3-5 years of professional library experience working with adults, preferably in an urban setting, and 3-5 years supervisory experience in a public library.
Additional requirements include language skills, mathematical skills, reasoning ability, interpersonal skills, a valid driver's license, NIMS training, and eligibility to obtain library certification from the State of Virginia.
Physical demands include operating a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone keyboard, standing, walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, sitting, climbing, or balancing, lifting and moving up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lifting and moving more than 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
The work environment is usually moderate in noise level.
