Job Description Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Principal or designee, the High School Math Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in mathematics aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning. The teacher fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and mathematical reasoning while creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for students.

This role contributes to student success academically and socially by promoting analytical thinking, real-world application of mathematical concepts, and adherence to School Board policies and applicable federal and state laws.

The purpose of this position is to build a pool of certified candidates in a high-demand field in LCS who can:

  • Deliver standards-based mathematics instruction aligned to Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Promote student achievement in mathematical concepts, reasoning, and problem-solving.
  • Maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Prepare students to be critical thinkers and effective problem-solvers.
  • Support the division’s mission to serve every child, every day.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Plan and implement developmentally appropriate mathematics lessons aligned with Virginia Standards of Learning.
  • Teach mathematical concepts including, but not limited to, algebra, geometry, statistics, and higher-level mathematics courses as assigned.
  • Assess student performance through formative and summative assessments; use results to adjust instruction.
  • Foster student understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving strategies, and real-world applications.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance, grades, and assessment data.
  • Create a positive and structured classroom environment that supports student engagement and learning.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support cross-curricular connections and instructional improvement.
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and staff regarding academic performance and expectations.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain licensure and enhance instructional practices.
  • Ensure compliance with school policies and applicable federal and state laws, including assessment and accountability requirements.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • Must hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia teaching license with a Mathematics endorsement.
  • Experience teaching high school-aged students is preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics curriculum and instructional best practices.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
