Aviation Maintenance Technician Instructor

Overview

Under supervision of the Director of Aviation Maintenance Technician Program, the Aviation Maintenance Technician Instructor will develop and maintain curriculum and provide instruction to students during classroom, lab, and shop training within Liberty University’s FAA approved 14

CFR Part
147 curriculum to prepare students for careers as Aviation Maintenance Technicians and related fields.

• Instruct students in all aspects of 14
  
  CFR Part
  147 required Airframe and Power Plant Certification course, including classroom lectures.
• Lead and direct students in the completion of hands‑on lesson‑associated lab projects by demonstration and supervision.
• Evaluate and grade students’ performance in subject areas taught.
• Provide relevant information and feedback to the director regarding student progress in projects, including grading and record keeping.
• Prepare 14
  
  CFR Part
  147 Airframe and Powerplant certification course lessons, associated training aids and equipment for demonstration to, or for use by students.
• Research and order materials for training aids, equipment, and lesson‑associated lab projects.
• Advise and recommend to the director regarding the purchase and procurement of equipment, materials, and supplies or use in the training.
• Teach, or assist in teaching, class, or projects for General, Airframe, and Powerplant subject areas approved to teach (per FAA approved LU AMTS OFFICIALS LIST, on file in the director’s office).
• Oversee and supervise assigned lab technician to the subject area.
• Assist in training new staff/faculty in the use and operation of training aids and equipment.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the director.
• Supervise assigned lab technicians to the subject area.

• FAA mechanic certification with both Airframe and Powerplant ratings.
• Experience in aviation maintenance field or equivalent in commercial, mission or military environment.
• Preferred:
  College degree (4year).

• Proficiency in understanding 14

  147 as it relates to required practical projects of an FAA approved AMTS.
• Proficiency in aircraft technology, maintenance, and operations.
• Ability to understand and follow procedures set forth in typical aircraft maintenance documentation and manuals.
• Proficiency in making arithmetic calculations related to aircraft maintenance.
• Ability to make accurate judgments and decisions related to safety based on visual inspections and performance checks of aircraft equipment.
• Proficiency in analyzing symptoms of improper operation of aircraft systems and following troubleshooting procedures.
• Effective communication both verbally and in writing, including proficiency in English.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Excellent computer skills, especially with Microsoft Office suite.
• Problem‑solving ability, reasoning, analyzing information and applying judgment.

Occasionally required to travel to local and campus locations. Frequently required to sit for extended periods to perform deskwork or type on a keyboard. Regularly required to hear and speak to effectively communicate orally. Required to stand, walk, and climb stairs to move about the building. Handle materials, reach overhead, kneel or stoop in order to conduct business. Regularly lift 20 or fewer pounds.

Required to crawl under, over, and around engines and cockpits. Must be able to use all types of hand and power tools. Physical demands: work well under pressure in a fast‑paced environment while exercising sound judgment. Personal demands: read and abide by Liberty University Mission Statement and School of Aeronautics Mission/Vision statement, maintain professional appearance, and demonstrate a positive attitude and respect for all.

The working environment is a climate‑controlled office setting and a heated (but not air‑conditioned) hangar/shop area. Requires outdoor aircraft engine runs. Areas are well‑lighted with occasionally moderate to high noise levels. Hearing protection is required at times.
