Literacy Specialist

The Middle School Reading Specialist collaborates with school-based teams to provide targeted literacy intervention to students in Grades 6–8. Using evidence-based practices aligned to the Science of Reading, the specialist supports implementation of Student Reading Plans (SRPs), delivers small-group intervention, monitors student progress, and contributes to school wide literacy initiatives under the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA).

Collaborates to create and implement Student Reading Plans (SRPs) for students identified as needing additional reading support through the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS).

Delivers small-group and one-on-one instruction to identified students, using Board-approved supplemental and intervention programs.

Conducts ongoing progress monitoring using diagnostic screeners; documents and shares student growth through regular updates.

Collaborates with classroom teachers, special educators, English learner teachers, and MTSS teams to support instructional alignment and coordinate intervention scheduling.

Engages families with regular updates and provides home support strategies.

Participates in literacy-related PLCs and supports professional learning by modeling and co-planning effective literacy practices.

Creates opportunities for stakeholders to gain knowledge of the Science of Reading.

Upholds fidelity of implementation for all instructional materials and strategies aligned with the Science of Reading.
