Library Bookmobile Coordinator
Performs professional library work planning, developing, coordinating, and evaluating library services and outreach provided through the Lynchburg Public Library's Bookmobile. The successful candidate will be responsible for collection development, programming, community outreach, and the supervision and evaluation of Bookmobile staff. Works collaboratively with the Bookmobile Manager of Operations to ensure effective, responsive, and high-quality Bookmobile service. This position will work directly on the Bookmobile and drive the vehicle and will be required to work nights, weekends, and special community events.
Essential duties include:
- Planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating library services provided through the Bookmobile in alignment with the library's mission, strategic priorities, and service standards
- Leading collection development for the bookmobile, including selection, evaluation, weeding, and maintenance of materials to meet the interests and needs of the communities served
- Analyzing circulation statistics, patron feedback, community demographics, and other data to inform collection development and service decisions
- Designing and coordinating engaging library programs, including literacy, educational, cultural, and community-based programs, with assistance from the Bookmobile Manager of Operations and other library staff
- Supervising, directing, training, and evaluating Bookmobile staff, including full-time and part-time employees
- Establishing and maintaining partnerships and professional relationships with schools, nonprofit organizations, community agencies, businesses, neighborhood organizations, and other community groups
- Providing professional reference, reader's advisory, technology assistance, and other library services to Bookmobile patrons
- Collecting, analyzing, and reporting data related to Bookmobile use, programming, outreach, partnerships, and community impact
- Maintaining knowledge of current trends and best practices in public librarianship, outreach, collection development, early literacy, programming, and community engagement
- Assisting with development and monitoring of the Bookmobile budget and recommending expenditures related to collections, programming, outreach, and services
- Ensuring that Bookmobile services are accessible, welcoming, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of diverse communities
- Participating in library planning, committees, staff meetings, professional development, and system-wide initiatives
Additional duties include:
- Collaborating with other library staff members as requested on special projects
- When unusual situations occur and/or the City Manager declares a State of Emergency, all City employees may be required to accept special assignments and perform as needed to ensure appropriate service delivery
Supervisory responsibilities include:
- Interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
Minimum education and experience required:
- Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution required.
- Minimum three to five years of professional library experience, including supervisory experience, required. Strong knowledge of the principles and methods of modern library service, including automated systems, collection development, programming, outreach, and digital resources. Candidates should demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and public engagement skills.
Additional requirements:
- Must successfully complete IS100 and IS700 National Incident Management (NIMS) training within 90 days of employment. May also be required to complete higher levels of NIMS training as determined appropriate for the position.
