Special Education Teacher - General Curriculum

This position will be supervised by the Department of Student Services and will be responsible for providing instructional services to students who are placed at the Restorative Academy. The Restorative Academy is a program for students who need behavioral and/or mental health support in order to build skills that will allow them to be successful at their base school. This teacher will provide students in small class settings (approximately 10 students) direct instructional support.

Essential functions include demonstrating willingness to work with teachers to help students complete work assigned to them, employing special educational strategies and techniques during instruction to improve the development of sensory and perceptual motor skills, language, cognition, and memory. The teacher will teach socially acceptable behavior, as determined by the student's individualized education plan (IEP) by employing techniques in an overall positive behavioral support system.

They will modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based on a variety of instructional techniques and technologies. The teacher will prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles, demonstrate knowledge of appropriate instructional strategies for secondary school students, and monitor student progress and collect behavior data.

The teacher will collaborate with base school teachers to ensure that students maintain academic progress to support transition back to their base school. They will plan for individual student differences, work to achieve division/school/department objectives, utilize a variety of teaching methods, communicate objective(s) and purpose(s) of lesson, utilize various forms of technology to assist in the delivery of instruction, provide opportunities for student responses and give appropriate feedback to students, utilize effective motivational strategies, pace instruction to provide opportunities for student success, deliver curriculum and instruction in accordance with school division guidelines, establish, communicate, and maintain high standards for responsible student behavior, plan for and make effective use of time, materials, and resources, organize students for effective instruction, demonstrate respect, consideration, and courtesy, cooperate with other teachers to exchange ideas, accept and/or offer constructive suggestions in a professional manner, maintain a learning environment that contributes to a positive school climate, provide opportunities for success for all students, maintain accurate records measuring student achievement, adhere to board and school policies, maintain professionalism during stressful situations, communicate with parents, students, staff, and community members in a professional manner, and maintain confidentiality.

They will accept and fulfill additional responsibilities designated by the building administrator.

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with a special education endorsement in general curriculum. Candidate must possess leadership and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, parents, and staff. Supervisory responsibility is none. Minimal travel within the school district may be required.
