Materials Engineer
Position Overview:
As our Materials Engineer, you will be responsible for ensuring materials selected in design, analysis, and prototyping activities for new nuclear systems are compatible and acceptable.
Location:
On-site in Lynchburg, VA at the Advanced Technologies Office
Your Day to Day as a Materials Engineer:
Perform materials engineering duties in support of procurement, fabrication, joining and testing of raw material commodities. Provide innovative, technically significant, and economically critical material solutions in support of design and manufacturing of components. Oversee activities associated with material characterization. Perform failure analysis activities and identify failure modes of materials. Prepare material performance specifications. Prepare material evaluations and specifications for use in additive manufacturing applications.
Communicate material related technical concepts across all levels of the organization and with the customer. Provide direction to weld development activities related to material issues. Work with design and manufacturing engineering to resolve materials joining, machining and processing issues before and during manufacturing. Develop, maintain and apply materials and material solutions to meet project thermal, mechanical, electrical, environmental, and chemical requirements.
Required Qualifications:
A bachelor's degree in engineering (i.e. Metallurgical Engineering, Material Science Engineering, or similar discipline) or physics is required. A minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a metallurgical/materials/manufacturing engineering environment is required. Must have relevant engineering experience along with technical expertise and communication skills to coordinate multiple engineering activities simultaneously. Must have additive manufacturing experience. Must have hands-on experience and ability to work in a laboratory environment Must be able to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely written and verbal communication.
