Job Description

Central Virginia Community College is located in Lynchburg, Virginia, in view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. CVCC is a comprehensive two‑year institution of higher education with an enrollment of approximately 5,000 students in occupational/technical programs and university‑parallel/college transfer programs.

The Central Virginia Community College, Office of Public Safety and Police supports the educational mission of the college by administering security and safety programs that comply with state and federal mandates. The department’s mission is to provide public safety services with efficiency, professionalism, and integrity; maintain a safe learning environment; protect college facilities and property; enforce the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia and college regulations;

and educate the community on emergency preparedness and personal safety.

As a sworn law enforcement officer, the position is responsible for the safety and well‑being of CVCC students, faculty, staff, customers, and visitors. The officer maintains order and protects life and property by enforcing laws, ordinances, and college policy within the CVCC jurisdiction, conducting high‑visibility patrols, responding to calls for assistance—including emergency and crisis situations—and providing related safety services.

• Patrol assigned area in vehicle and on foot, performing active campus problem identification.
• Attend campus‑related meetings and maintain high patrol visibility to assist in crime prevention.
• Conduct routine patrols, concentrating on high‑incident areas to detect potential criminal activity or service needs.
• Regularly inspect college property, facilities, and surrounding areas within campus jurisdiction.
• Monitor radio broadcasts and coordinate with other officer(s) to ensure awareness of area activities and provide assistance as needed.
• Identify, report, and respond to suspicious activities or service needs.

May be required to perform other duties as assigned and to assist the agency or state government during an emergency declaration by the Governor.

• Classes in police science or a combination of education, training, or related criminal justice certificate program.
• Minimum age 21 with a current valid Virginia driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Current law enforcement officer certification, or ability to obtain certification from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) within 12 months of employment.
• Certification or ability to certify as a Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) operator.
• Completed basic first aid and adult and child CPR/AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training.
• Certification or ability to qualify for use of a firearm and all approved police equipment.
• Completion of designated Integrated Communications System (ICS) / National Incident Management System (NIMS) trainings.
• Working knowledge of law enforcement, emergency, and safety procedures, as well as state and local laws and ordinances.
• Familiarity with CVCC organization, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures.
• Proficiency with PC‑based software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and PowerPoint for preparing written reports.
• Physical fitness to meet Virginia DCJS training standards for law enforcement officers.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to exercise discretion and use diplomacy in sensitive situations.
• Ability to act calmly and appropriately in emergency situations, collaborate with academic departments and staff, support departments and staff, students, and community organizations.
• Capacity to work varied hours, multiple campuses, and available for emergency recall.
• Experience operating a state vehicle and ability to perform foot and vehicle patrols for extended periods.

• Education in criminal justice or related programs.
• Operation of a state vehicle.
• Minimally required travel to off‑site centers in Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, and Campbell Counties.
