Job Summary
The Coal Equipment Operator 1st Class is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of coal-handling systems within a power generation facility. This role ensures the continuous and reliable supply of fuel by operating, monitoring, and maintaining equipment used for receiving, conveying, crushing, and reclaiming coal.
This position works a 12-hour rotating shift, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
Starting pay is $34.87 per hour. This position does not pay relocation costs.
Coal Handling & Operations- Operate and monitor coal-handling equipment such as conveyors, stacker-reclaimers, coal feeders, crushers, dozers, locomotives, and loaders.
- Perform coal yard operations including stockpiling, blending, and reclaiming coal to ensure consistent fuel quality.
- Conduct routine equipment inspections to verify proper operation and identify mechanical or operational issues.
- Adjust equipment settings and flows to maintain optimal coal delivery to the plant.
- Follow all plant safety procedures, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and hazard recognition protocols.
- Maintain compliance with environmental regulations related to coal dust suppression, runoff management, and material handling.
- Respond to abnormal operating conditions and assist with emergency procedures when needed.
- Perform basic preventive maintenance tasks such as lubrication, belt adjustments, screen cleaning, and debris removal.
- Report equipment failures and assist maintenance personnel with troubleshooting and repairs.
- Keep coal yard and equipment areas clean, safe, and free of obstructions.
- Record equipment readings, operating conditions, and coal quality information.
- Log abnormalities, corrective actions, and shift activity in plant records or digital systems.
- Communicate clearly with control room operators, supervisors, and fellow team members.
- High school diploma or GED, with 0-2 years of experience and a valid driver's license.
- Experience in industrial, mining, or power plant environments (coal-handling experience preferred).
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as loaders, dozers, and skid steers.
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to perform basic maintenance tasks.
- Willingness to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments, heights, confined spaces, and dusty conditions.
- Previous coal yard or fuel handling experience in power generation.
- Knowledge of conveyor systems, control systems, and bulk material handling equipment.
- OSHA safety training, MSHA training, or equivalent.
- Strong situational awareness and commitment to safety.
- Mechanical troubleshooting ability.
- Effective communication and teamwork.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in fast paced or changing conditions.
- Physical stamina for climbing, lifting, and outdoor work.
