Overview

The Boiler-Chiller Tech II is responsible for troubleshooting and repairing Boiler-Chiller equipment while providing hands-on participation in installation, operation, and maintenance of LU assets. This includes assorted fans, pumps, piping systems, unit heaters, drive systems, furnaces, boilers, chillers, and related ancillary equipment. The role requires working independently and exercising good judgment and discretion.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities
  • As Essential Personnel, be available in the event of school closings, delays, shutdowns, and emergencies including cleanup required because of severe weather. Performs snow removal activities as assigned. Maintenance personnel are essential to LU and its day-to-day functions, especially during campus events. Must be available to work scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise.
  • Report to work at the required time and perform duties as assigned by the Boiler-Chiller Supervisor and/or BC Tech III – Lead.
  • Work 1st or 2nd shift and be on a 7-day rotation as needed.
  • Be familiar with the standard concepts, practices, and procedures of the Boiler-Chiller Trade and possess working knowledge of its operations.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing duties. PPE includes protective eyewear, ear protection, hardhat, gloves, safety-toed shoes, masks, coveralls, reflective safety vest, and a harness with a lanyard when operating aerial lifts.
  • Monitor boilers, chillers, heat recover pumps and fans.
  • Perform chemical testing on heating water in boilers/heat exchangers and water in cooling towers, chillers, and other plant systems.
  • Respond to alarms, troubleshoot, and make needed repairs.
  • Think logically and solve problems with little guidance.
  • Have basic knowledge of occupational hazards and appropriate safety precautions.
  • Assist BC Tech III with startup, operation, and monitoring of chiller and boiler systems.
  • Assist BC Tech III with plumbing and gas piping associated with boilers and repair leaks.
  • Enter data into computer programs and operate related equipment.
  • Immediately report any safety incidents to the Boiler Chiller Supervisor or BC Tech III. Reportable items include bodily injury, near misses, potential dangers, spills, and other accidents.
  • Maintain good housekeeping practices.
  • Assist other Boiler-Chiller Technicians, lead technicians, and Supervisor.
  • Provide HVAC Boiler/Chiller repair services before, during, and after special events as emergencies arise, including during scheduled and unscheduled work times.
  • Stay informed about current and emergent technologies, processes, products, services, and industry performance benchmarks.
  • Adhere to Liberty University policies and represent the University in an exemplary manner.
  • Work effectively as part of a team and support LU’s Christian model and Mission – “Training Champions for Christ.”
  • Other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

May supervise BC Tech I.

Qualifications And Credentials

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of experience troubleshooting repairs/preventative maintenance on commercial BC/HVAC systems.
  • Basic knowledge of computer operation for use on energy management systems and CMMS (School Dude).
  • Current EPA certification in refrigerants required.
  • Journeyman card preferred.

  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English professionally.
  • Public communication skills for professional representation of Liberty University.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Computer skills:
    Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) and strong computer skills desired.

Physical and Sensory Abilities

  • May be required to travel for training.
