Heavy Equipment Operator

Position Overview

Heavy Equipment Operator I – responsible for a range of construction and maintenance tasks across University grounds and surrounding areas. Duties are performed primarily from spring through fall, with occasional assignments year‑round.

• Excavate, grade, and perform site preparation for construction and landscaping projects.

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional construction experience.
• Must be able to lift 50+ pounds and operate heavy equipment in a typical Virginia climate.
• Valid Virginia driver’s license with a clean driving record; liability insurance required for company vehicles.
• Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills.
• Professional appearance and courteous demeanor.
• Ability to work independently, follow instructions, and work with the public and coworkers.

• Effective verbal and written communication in English.
• Problem‑solving ability, logical reasoning, and sound judgment.
• Physical stamina to stand, walk, climb stairs, kneel, and perform outdoor work in varying weather.
• Reliability, punctuality, and adaptability to unscheduled hours during emergencies and special events.
• Team orientation and commitment to campus mission.

• Indoor/outdoor work with exposure to weather, dust, fumes, and loud noise.
• Frequent travel to on‑campus and off‑campus locations.
• May work weekends, holidays, and evenings as required.
• Compliance with all safety regulations and PPE policies.
