Position: Maintenance Craftsman II - HVAC

Maintenance Craftsman II - HVAC

HVAC Craftsman II position works with other LCS HVAC Technicians, providing hands-on participation in preventive maintenance tasks, installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of the Division's heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment and associated systems. Provide environmental conditions consistent with efficient and effective operational requirements to ensure student and staff comfort. Services, repairs, maintains plans, and oversees the Building Automation and Energy Management Systems (BAS/EMS) upgrades.

Installs, operates, and maintains the District's heating, air conditioning/refrigeration systems, and energy systems; conducts regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas, and electrically operated air conditioning equipment; and makes necessary adjustments or repairs. Inspects, repairs, modifies and installs heating and air conditioning and ventilation equipment, including refrigeration and air conditioning compressors, receivers, condensers, chillers, water-cooling towers, forced-air converter units, pumps, automatic and hand valves, expansion valves, and capillary tubes.

Installs and calibrates energy management controls; installs direct digital controllers (DDC). Operates a variety of hand and power tools, vacuum pumps, and test equipment utilized in the trade; maintains equipment in effective and safe working conditions. Diagnoses mechanical and electrical problems; repairs or replaces defective parts in units, equipment, and controls. Installs, rebuilds, replaces, or repairs fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets, and other equipment as necessary.

Receives work orders; prepares cost estimates for projects and orders materials in accordance with established procedures; works with and inspects the work of outside contractors. Follows safe work practices and procedures; ensures proper safety precautions are observed. Works from sketches, plans, drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Monitors the work of outside contractors.

Lynchburg City Schools reserves the right to update, revise, or change this job description and related duties at any time. Stands on call and willing to return to duty as an emergency arises for any building need. Instructs and trains Maintenance Workers, Maintenance Craftsmen I, and Custodians. Performs other duties as assigned by the Assistant Director for Facilities and/or Director of Facilities.

High school diploma or equivalent. Must have ten years of experience working as an HVAC Technician with all types of HVAC systems, including installation, diagnosis, and repair for those systems. Must hold a valid Master HVAC license from a State that issues this level and type of license or be able to show certifications and experience that are the equivalent of a master license.

Must have at least three years' experience working with Direct Digital Controls for HVAC systems, including building automation systems and building management systems. Five years experience in facility maintenance and/or building construction. State License or certification may be required for certain positions.

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices and methods of building construction and repair. Skill in the use and care of tools of the trade. Ability to troubleshoot and correct problems in building structural components, hardware, and furnishings. Web-based building control systems. Practices of sustainability programs. Air compressor and pneumatic control operation, installation, maintenance, and repair. Cooling tower and boiler water treatment.

Welding, soldering, and pipe fitting techniques. Health and safety regulations. Has a valid Virginia motor vehicle operator's license.

Reliable transportation is necessary. Daily travel between schools, the LCS building, and local areas is required. Minimal travel outside of the City of Lynchburg is required.
