Job Purpose

Aligned with the mission of the Operations division, the Maintenance Technician – Carpentry is responsible for ensuring a safe, functional, and structurally sound campus environment. Working within a team of multi-disciplinary trades specialists (including electrical, plumbing, and HVAC), this position performs general campus-wide maintenance while serving as the university's primary expert for finish and structural carpentry, custom fabrications, and historic hardware preservation.

Specific

Job Duties
  • Specialized Carpentry & Fabrication:
Lead the structural repair, alteration, and aesthetic maintenance of all campus facilities. Fabricate, install, and repair cabinetry, shelving, doors, frames, drywall, acoustic ceilings, and architectural trim across historic and modern university buildings.
  • Cross-Functional Team

    Collaboration:

Work dynamically within a multi-disciplinary team of "specialists" (including Electricians, Plumbers, and HVAC Technicians) to diagnose campus building issues and execute complex, multi-phase renovation or repair work orders seamlessly.
  • General Maintenance Operations:
Fulfill routine, daily general work orders assigned through the facilities management queue, performing basic preventative maintenance outside of the carpentry specialty when required by overall team volume and campus priorities.
  • Hardware & Locking Systems:
Troubleshoot, install, and maintain commercial door hardware, closers, exit devices, and related mechanical security components across academic and residential structures.
  • Campus Event Logistics:
Coordinate with the broader facilities management team to assist in the physical set-up, staging construction, and teardown for major university-wide milestones and events (e.g., Commencement, student move-in, and high-profile functions).
  • Data-Driven Work Order Management:
Utilize the university's Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) to track, update, and close work orders, accurately logging labor hours, material costs, and structural diagnostic notes.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Safety:
Maintain strict adherence to all federal, state, and local safety regulations, including OSHA standards, fire/life safety codes, and proper personal protective equipment (PPE) protocols in the shop and in the field.
  • Emergency Response & Severe Weather:
Serve as essential personnel to execute severe weather protocols, including campus-wide snow and ice removal operations, and provide prompt response to after-hours structural or facilities emergencies.
